I was already on the way out because I have a Bronco Badlands coming in, but on 2/28 I was rear ended. I was moving at 50mph, drunk driver flew up behind me at 75-80, hit me, and took off when I pulled over. Dash cam caught teh plate, but it was temp tags registered to a fake LLC (major issue here in Texas). Initially, damage didn't look too bad and my estimate was $2900. I had to wait until 3/28 to leave it at a shop since it was drivable and everyone's backed up. I saw the hitch was tweaked, so I suspected frame damage. I was right.

Ended up being the box was buckled pretty good as well as pretty significant frame damage in the rear. They were going to section it, but I told them I wanted a full frame and not one that was cut in half and welded back together since it was such a new vehicle. My estimate shot up to about $19k and they made the decision to total the truck. It was beneficial to me - they paid out $46,800 on a truck I paid $38k for last year. Luckily I returned my bumper, sliders, lights, etc to stock and already pulled my rack and RTT off.

Hard to imagine this totaled it, but the truck did its job. I had zero injuries.

Ranger owner: “I don’t want a welded frame! Has to be factory!”

Ranger: Already has a welded frame consisting of half a dozen pieces from the factory.

It's ridiculous that they're totaling these trucks and it makes me think there's something else going on. My family has been in the body shop business for 50 plus years and I've never seen or heard of full frame vehicles getting written off by insurance companies like some of the ones we've seen on this forum. I can't wonder if some adjusters aren't making side deals with shops due to the value of these trucks. Before Illinois came up with specific junk titles for totaled cars, it was a common scam for adjusters to write off a vehicle, let a shop buy it on the cheap, the shop repaired it, flipped it, and then split the $ with the adjuster.

I mean anything to get that estimate up. It was either do what I can to get it totaled or waste everyone's time repairing it and going after diminished value when it's done. This way is much better.

And don't get me wrong, I'd trust the factory vs random shop tech any day of the week.

Glad you're okay, and that doesn't look like a writeoff but what do I know. Best of luck finding a new vehicle

That stinks man. Be glad you're not in wv has to be 75% of your trucks book value to be totaled. I agree though I don't want a vehicle with frame damage!
Yeah, in Texas it's generally if the total of repairs + supplemental claims (DV, rental, etc) + salvage value is 100% of ACV or greater it totals.

That's crazy. I know their cash value is Waaayyy higher thN I could ever get out of my vehicles! It's a shame but glad you weren't hurt and came out ahead financially.
