If the BMS system is disconnected, the PCM has other strategy to send a setpoint to the alternator. If communications between the alternator control is disconnected, the alternator has a built-in failsafe mode to put out a fixed voltage. If the BMS sensor is connected, it is used in calculations for a voltage setpoint.
Hot the nail on the head there. Every manufacturer has a "Fail Safe" method of sorts for how to do certain things when a particular system malfunctions in some way of sorts. Depending on the severity of said Malfunction will depend on if the vehicle will be disabled or still drivable

How did your test go with measuring current on the negative battery lead?
About that....... I had one of them very lazy weekends doing nothing but playing videogames...... To the point I did an all nighter on Saturday night....... I had. A list of things to accomplish........ I didn't even get one of those started.......
