Trying to add autonomous driving. Has anyone tried to add lane centering to their 5G ranger? Is it possible?

With comma ai out i relaly want to add some kind of self driving to my car but i dont think the hardware permits. I know peple have retroactively done it with mavericks and f150s but havent seen anyone do it in a ranger. But I think those cars shipped with copilot 360+ as an option and the 5G never did.

I know there is a huge thread about ACC and LKA but i am interested in lane centering.

360 Co-pilot is on the XLT and Lariat, which model do you have?

Are you looking for for Co-pilot +assist?

I have a 2022 LXT,I have co-pilot 360, which has lka (nudges you back into the lane), and ACC. I am interested in Lane centering, which keeps you in the center of the lane proactively. Tht I am pretty sure is a copilot 360+/bluecreuise feature.

Not sure if anybody has done that on the forum. If so maybe they will chime in.

In the meantime keep those arms strong by centering yourself. ?

I would strongly suspect that would be something Ford would have to do I bet that kind of programing is locked out. You know lawyers need to make money.

To each his own but my wife's new Pacifica has it and I regard it as a pain in the ass, along with auto stop/start. Neither is as bad as the system in a BMW I rented for a business trip a couple years ago.
The Ranger's A.S.S. is disabled by the tailgate light bar because it thinks it's towing a trailer.

Considering Comma AI (company you mentioned,) supports only 2024+ Rangers - my guess would be that you are correct and the 5g truck is lacking some hardware for the software to "drive".

I've not seen any discussion thus far on adding autonomous driving capabilities to the 5g Ranger - believe you're the first to explore this.

It may be worth your time to reach out to some of these companies (Comma,) to see if a representative is able to answer your question on a technical basis.

For what its worth this was a converstion I had about a month ago on the commaai discord:

DrAskew:
What really matters is the PSCM.
If it has lane centering, it will work. If it has lane keeping, it won’t.
Lane centering continuously steers the car, while lane keeping just nudges it back when it drifts too close to a lane line.

Me:
Just out of curiosity — do you know why lane keeping doesn’t work? The motor in the steering rack can turn the wheel, right? Isn’t most of the lane centering that Comma.ai does based on its own vision system?

DrAskew:
Ford’s firmware has built-in safety locks that prevent Comma from using it properly. It was only designed to send occasional bursts to recenter the car. If it receives too many signals (like any safe control loop would send), the system stops responding.

Me:
Do you think there’s a chance someone figures out how to override this “too many signals” issue? Or is that pretty much a dead end?

DrAskew:
Someone would need to write custom firmware for the rack and pinion. Thousands of hours went into this a few years ago, with no success. And now that Ford hasn’t made those steering racks in over 3 years, I doubt anyone’s still pursuing it.

Me:
I thought Ford was still making vehicles with the regular CoPilot360 package (not Plus, not 2.0, not BlueCruise). That’s unfortunate—feels like this could unlock support for millions of vehicles. And people are constantly asking here if their cars are compatible.

Me:
Also, for what it’s worth, I drive a 2022 Ford Ranger.

DrAskew:
In the U.S., the Ranger didn’t get Lane Centering Assist until the 2024 model year.

Me:
Yeah, I know. It’s frustrating. I’m honestly pretty bummed. I really hope someone eventually circles back and revisits the Lane Keep Assist issue.

So thats what led me here to see if its possible to add lane centering lol.

Might take on the subject? Buy a vehicle that already has it so you don't have to worry about a retrofit and having problems.

Grouchy old man comment:
I learned to drive 55 yrs ago in HS Drivers Ed. The instructor would fail any student that backed up using only the rear view mirror, rather than looking over their shoulder out the rear window.
No blind spot, lane drift warnings. No auto braking, back up camera, etc.
I like and use all of these features on my Ranger, except the annoying lane drift alert which I shut off immediately. But I still drive using the basics the DE instructor taught. Be aware of your surroundings, leave yourself an out, focus and stay alert. I wouldn't pay for auto drive, and If it came with a trim package I'd turn it off. Staying alert is key, and I don't want that to atrophy. At my age there's enough of that happening on its own.
