I’m assuming the pump is a great option if you’re just wanting to swap the fluid only (not including the filter)? How often are yall swapping fluid?

the pump @AzScorpion shared seems like it’d help keep the mess to a minimum if I were changing the filter too. Pump out the old fluid, then drop the transmission fluid pan and swap the filter. A lot less fluid to spill out during that process.

I’m not gonna lie, I just didn’t want to mess with this process and was just gonna let the dealer do it. After reading this thread, that feels like it’d be lighting money on fire.

shifts on my 2019 transmission at 77k miles are occasionally growing more bumpy (still not hateful), and the occasional slam going from Park to Reverse. Seems like this thread might help me breathe new life into the truck at minimal expense. Thanks folks!

I did my first sucky swap at around 20,000 miles via the Fitzstick and pump. Drew a bit under 7 qts, and replaced with Valvoline ULV and a bottle of Lubeguard.
26,000 miles now and will do another swap right before our rv towing season starts, mid March, and at around 27,000 miles.
I figure every 6-7000 miles is cheap insurance. Valvoline ULV runs $6,50 on sale at NAPA, and a bottle of Lubeguard.....so for around $55 bucks I get a smooth trans and peace of mind.

Let me add, the $6.50 cost of the Valvoline ULV is an on sale price at NAPA when you buy a case of 6 quarts. You have to keep an eye out for their sales......when I bought mine I got 3 cases......

i'm re-reading things as i prep to do this procedure. i need to make sure i'm understanding.

everyone is saying they put in the regular transmission fluid and then removed 10-15 oz (depending on how much LG platinum is being used), then added the LG platinum.

why not add the LG platinum first, then add the transmission fluid. that way you can skip the step of removing the 10-15 oz of fluid?

or am i conflating people who are changing ALL their transmission fluid with people who are just adding LG platinum (not doing a transmission fluid change)?

also, the fitzstick is currently sold out... nuuuu

All I do is put 1oz in every bottle I open before I dump it in. There's usually enough room in the bottles to add it. That way every bottle has the right amount in it and I don't have to worry about over/underdosing. Not that it is a massive concern if you do.

Give them a shake and dump it in.

Now if you're doing the first go round then yes, you'll be adding a little more since the trans holds around 12qt and you only drain a little more than half that, so yea, go ahead and put the 12-15oz in first and then fill with atf. No need to add and then suck some back out.

I really like the 1 oz per bottle. Takes stupid (me!) out of the equation! Thanks!

Also, the do not overfill warning is duly noted @TJC! Thanks!

Not overfilling is harder than I thought it would be. The fluid expands a great deal when hot. And simply driving around town doesn't heat it up enough to get an accurate reading.

Yeah I find it hard to get the trans to operating temp necessary to check level unless it is a hot summer day.

Exactly! I wish there was a cold reading to go by.

Bottom end of the range cold will get you to the right level when hot.

Now this is good sh**! I assumed you could observe a lower level and expect the increase when hot, but this confirms the assumption.
