I got new wheels and tires last week, i got a new set of ford motorcraft TPMS sensors for the new ones. shop put everything on, and gave me back my old wheels and tires, took them home in the bed of the truck.

On the way home 4 tires were being read by the truck, they said they weren't sure if the programming took because the old ones were still so close. I got home, unload old wheels and tires, put them on a shelf in the garage about 10ft away from the truck. Drive the truck the next day, about 20 mins on the road, i get a TPMS system error and the truck reports no tire pressure data for any of the wheels.

I call the place, they say stop by, they put the truck in programming mode, 3 tires produce a honk and 1 does nothing. I ordered a new TPMS sensor and the little programming tool since it was cheap. Couple days later i go for a drive, 4 tires are reported, fine all day. next day, drive for about 20 mins, and i get the error again, no sensors synced.

The new sensor and remote have not been delivered yet, but anyone have any idea what may be going on? The shop said it would not be picking up the old set of tires because they are too far away (10ft on the shelf) so i dunno.. i hope i dont have to swap out a sensor, and why is it loosing sync with the other 3, even though they produced a toot from the horn? sorry for the long post.

I tried to us a tool to program sensors after tire rotation this weekend and could only get one to respond. After a few tries, I drove the truck above 15mph for about a quarter mile again, put it in programming mode by turning ignition key to run without starting truck and pressed the emergency flasher button on and off for three iterations. At that point, truck entered tpms programming mode and I started with driver front letting air out of tire until horn honked, proceeded to do the same for the other three tires and all completed successfully.

what does letting air out of the tire do (besides letting air out of the tire :p ) ? is there a significance to driving the truck above 15mph for a quarter mile? did you use the tool to resync?

Are the OEM TPMS supposed to be reprogrammed with each tire rotation? Or, are the OEM's automatically recognized as to wheel position. I'm just wondering if Ford Quick Lane service does reprogramming every time I take the truck in for the 5,000 'The Works' package which includes rotation.

I drove mine for a few hundred miles before relearning in hopes it was a smart system. Unfortunately, it appears that one must relearn them to assigned position with every tire rotation if you want the tire to display in the correct position on the instrument cluster.

I have never had an issue with my vehicles picking up the TPMS sensors when rotating tires or swapping my winters on and off.

What is the difference of doing the 3x Hazzard lights button vs the on/off ignition 3x +brake pedal method?
I don't know honestly.

I tried the "let the air out of the tires till it honks" method with the truck in training mode, and nothing happened. i tried using the little programming remote, also nothing happened, so, i have no idea whats going on :/

May be a visit to the tire shop required. I know the first tire in training mode took letting 6psi out before it honked when I tried it. Since you have new TPMS sensors in the new wheels, it may require use of a programming tool.

I'm think reprogramming is the root of the problem.

I've never re-programmed on this or my F150 and do all my own rotation/seasonal swaps. Every time the truck re-learns the new wheels on the first drive over 20 miles.

My f150 I had 5 matching tire/wheels and carried the 5th in the box. I'd do rotation using the 5th, and then carry the wheel that came off in the box, and it still re-learned on it's own, with no issue.

I know that's not helpful to the OP, but just sharing my thoughts. Don't let the shop re-program until after you allow it a chance to do it on it's own.

I drove mine for a few hundred miles before relearning in hopes it was a smart system. Unfortunately, it appears that one must relearn them to assigned position with every tire rotation if you want the tire to display in the correct position on the instrument cluster.
I did the same (admittedly, Aus-spec Ranger). Factory sensors in new wheels. Everyone said it would re-learn automatically. 1,000km later, still hadn't.

Purchased tool, done in 5 mins and tool now lives in glove compartment.

I've no doubt some (most/all) do re-learn automatically, but mine just didn't want to play. Never had a problem in the 20,000km since.

I have rotated my tires three times without doing anything to the TPMS system….never had an issue with the display not being correct
