I’ve got a 2021 XLT.. it’s got 91,000km…

between the stupid things going wrong with the truck, and my experience thus far with Ford service has me wanting to trade up…

I love the truck. But I don’t want to pay to fix things once I’m out of warranty. (Bought extended bumper to bumper to match factory 100,000km power train warranty)

My Ranger has been in the shop more times than the last 3 vehicles I’ve had combined.. power windows… rear window seals.. struts… a control arm.. EGR issues… All the body panels are out of whack, not a huge deal but it’s pretty bad… I’m function over fashion but NOTHING lines up… I’m having HVAC issues… severe clicking… and of course the techs can never replicate at a note of $40 a time just to listen…. I don’t want to get stuck with that repair after my warranty…

and now today my tailgate won’t open. It’s the passenger side latch.. pretty sure the rod to the handle broke…

WTF!

its 2 years old! Bought it October of 2021!!!

what’s next!?

am I the only one?

and my last oil change the tech forgot to put the filler cap on and oil blew all over my engine… I got my money back but Jesus…

I want to keep the truck because I need it for its off road capabilities.. it’s very good off road.. better than my Tacoma was.. the ability to lock my rear diff at any time is big for me.. and the truck crawls and is smoother than the Toyota…

but that damn Toyota was never in the shop more than 2 times in 160k for an actual problem..

talk me down!
Sad. I've had 2 tundras and still have a highlander. None have been in shop for other than a couple recalls and regular service. I wanted to downsize to Tacoma but it can't be flat towed behind our motorhome. That's why I got the 21 lariat 4x4. So far no issues. I'm hoping it stays that way. Best of luck to you.

Sounds to me like you beat this truck up four wheeling, and not to mention having 91,000 miles in 3 years.

I have had 3 Tacoma's and 2 Frontiers and between the 5 trucks they have never been in the shop more than once or twice per vehicle. I got a 2019 Ranger XLT FX4 on 6 Jan 2024 with 28,000 miles. It has had to have the Heater Blend door replaced (2 day job to remove the dash completely) and the fuel pressure sensor replaced (drop the tank). Now first thing in the morning the trans shifts up or down in 3 or 4th and clunks and shutters. Hoping the TSB will fix that. I haven't had a Ford in 30 years and at this rate, I won't again for another 30 years!

Yeah, it’s you. My 2019 Lariat is nearly flawless with 40,000 miles on it! Couple minor issues early on and working and looking marvelous now!

I have a 2021 XLT FX4 with 35k hard miles on it, yes I beat the hell out of it and it starts and works every day, and it too has been flawless other than minor BS that never bothered me, the wiper blades from the factory are garbage didnt last the first 20k

Not the case my friend. You’d never know it was off road. And 70,000km of that 90,000 is all highway…

I think some people are getting offended and thinking I’m trash talking the truck..

the truck has never been abused either. I off road it, but I’m not doing anything insane… mostly gravel and wash out roads. Light mud.

Anyways, Ford got back to me today, and they won’t cover the passenger side latch for the tailgate.

But they are covering the HVAC unit which would’ve cost me a lot of money.

I’m also dropping close to $2000 in maintenance.

Transmission fluid and filter

transfer case fluid

Differential oils

sparkplugs

I’m doing all this early so if the tech picks up on anything while he’s doing it I’m still under warranty.

I need to keep this truck. Not because of finances, but because it’s exactly what I need

Sounds like its time to move on. Thats alot of miles for a 21 MY. If the deal makes sense go for it. Plenty of new trucks in the mid-size segment.

You wanted people to talk you down but it sounds like people are appealing to your own sensibilities which is; why own something that constantly frustrates you and is potentially a financial burden on you when you're in a good position to trade now.

Understand the Ranger is exactly what you need, however, there are many midsize competitors from other manufacturers not to mention a brand new Ranger coming out if you wanted to give Ford a second chance.

With so many issues there's no guarantee "everything will be fine" once you cross a certain threshold. The truck could be a lemon.

It really isn’t a good time to trade though… interest rates are through the roof! And a truck like what I have from a competitor is going on 10k more!

I got my truck for $40,800CAN +Tax

and I’ve got a couple more years and it’s paid for at 2% interest.

90% of the work that’s been done to this thing has been warranty. It’s just the frustration of always taking it in to be looked at and then fixed at a later date.

I’m hoping to get this thing to 240,000km

So here is hoping nothing else major goes wrong.

I guess I talked myself down… lol

Sounds like the previous owner dumped their truck when they found out about the HVAC blend door issue, and you got stuck dealing with it :(

I also love my Ranger (first Ford for my immediate family). However, you can bet your @ss that when I get to the end of the extended warranty at 70,000 miles, I will be trading in for a new truck. I don't trust Ford or their dealers as much as I have with our Subarus and Hondas in the past. I will probably trade for another Ford truck, again with an extended warranty.

My 2019 has never had any issues, knock on wood, in over 4 years. And it will be traded for a new 6g if it ever comes in, bc it's the perfect size truck for me. I think you got one with issues, doesn't sound like your fault. Seems like most problems could be behind you and now, as my dad would say his philosophy was, if it was paid off, run it til the wheels fall off (and hope that's a long way off!)

The tailgate latch is probably a plastic retainer for the rod that connects the latch to the handle. Sometimes they crack or most likely it just got in a bind and popped out. That should be a simple fix regardless of what it is. You would think warranty would fix simple things sometimes though just to create goodwill :(

You ever have one of those days where everything just seems to go bad ? That happens on the assembly line sometimes also and it can spread to the whole damn team. Sometimes people just get a vehicle that was assembled on that day and it can suck. Good luck with the truck though and maybe things have run their course. They really are great trucks.
