Thats the problem...some unsuspecting person opens the hood, and.....

thehorror-horrified.gif
It''l keep vandals from stealing it. And seeing some prices for them, it's a tempting target! =D
? Brandon might have stumbled on to something. Since the new Rangers have no hood struts when a vandal see this he'll be in such shock he'll let go of the hood and it'll slam down on his fingers. Problem solved no more stealing! ?

The feel when I can do this but I can’t paint a silly engine cover ? its like those videos where you spend 15 minutes on an art project and then 4 hours on an art project ?

I can’t even do paint by number. Too many lines!

You are almost convincing me to actually paint my cover correctly. "Public institution lunch tray" perfectly describes my abomination of a paint job on the cover. I think that's what is going through every mechanic's mind that pops my hood open. Enjoy the laugh  :turkey:

Wow... That really looks unusually bad.
Did you repair some sort of damage under that paint?

Edit: I really need to read the WHOLE thread before replying...

Okay, so I should probably take a breath and write one response and not three!

But they list higher HP and torque, is that because it says to use 93 octane but our Ranger manuals say use 87?
  • 350 lb-ft of Torque @ 4000 RPM
  • 310 Horsepower @ 4800 RPM
  • 93 Octane Unleaded (Maximum 10% Ethanol)
I know my wife's Mazda explicitly says diff HP for diff octane (227 vs. 256).
I heard on a vid somewhere that aftermarket tunes get some of their HP boost from basing the mods on higher octane fuel and that the stock motor is tuned to do ok on cheap 87 octane fuel. That said, I run the weak 91 octane fuel we can get in AZ. I am quite happy with the motor, it really pulls well. When I am in TX, I can get 93 octane and the power increase over 91 octane is very noticeable, even with the stock tune. With a good tune and 93 Octane gas the truck would be stunning.

Here is a photo of the installed Mustang Eco Boost engine cover on a Ranger.

The Mustang engine cover will fit on top of the Ranger engine.
This may not work for most people as the cover needs to be removed to check or add oil.

Not an issue for me. Three acorn nuts and the cover comes off.
I like the look this cover provides. To me it is better than nothing and visually more appealing than the now expense factory alternative.

Here is what I did to make it fit.
All hardware was purchased at my local True Value Hardware store.

In the above photo you can see the mounting points I used.

This photo is detail of front risers. Both front risers are the same.

This is the rear riser. Little different configuration.

This gives you an idea of the hardware used.

The above photos show the areas that were removed to make the cover fit on the Ranger engine.
All cuts were done using only a hacksaw. Very simple to do.

IMG_5201.jpg

You can see in the above photo where the three holes were drilled into the cover to align with the installed riser mounting points. Measurements in the next photo.

This cover sits rather high on the engine but works for me.
Project only took about one and a half hours to complete. Plus the time getting hardware.

So this can be done. Not perfect but for now I will leave it on the truck.

Nice !!! Looks like it would be easy enough to hog out/elongate the hole around the dipstick/oil filler cap to be able to access both.

If the cover was moved about an inch to the front, the dipstick should line up.
But the cover is rather high and getting to the oil fill port will be difficult.
I may try to come up with a way to fill the two large holes in the cover to give a better appearance. For now I'm happy with how this came out. But there is room for minor improvements.
