They still have to pick the lock. Unplugging harness DOES NOT unlock the tailgate.

I live in major metro area.

I've never once heard of somebody's tailgate being stolen.

Where do you folks live? Bierut?
This guy has copy/pasted that post across multiple tailgate lock threads, some of which had long since died. It's almost as though he wants to feel like buying a tailgate cylinder lock was a smart thing to do when there's honestly no reason for it assuming you actually lock your truck.

I myself live on the outskirts of Oakland, a purported high-crime area if you believe everything you read, and I also have never had a tailgate stolen nor known someone who has. YMMV.

From what I can find on the internet it appears this was an issue a few years ago, but the newest article I can find is from 2018?

"Houston police said in 2017 and 2018 they had about 1,300 reported truck tailgate thefts."

Of the top five states for tailgate theft, four are in the West. In descending order of theft claims, the states are:

  • Texas – 451 claims
  • California – 272 claims
  • Arizona – 125 claims
  • Florida – 86 claims
  • Nevada – 36 claims
As for the highest-ranked tailgate theft cities, three are in Texas, while Arizona and California have one each, as follows:

  • Houston – 96 thefts
  • San Antonio – 70 thefts
  • Dallas – 51 thefts
  • Phoenix – 36 thefts
  • Fresno – 31 thefts

Houston had 2.326 million people residing within it's limits in 2018.

I'd say a conservative guess would be 1 pickup for every 2 people in Houston.

That would mean that in 2018 in Houston, the most likely place for this to happen, 0.1% of truck tailgates were stolen.

You people worried about this should get a lock on your catalytic converter too.

I think I'd rather have them take it, then mutilate it and the truck trying to get it off. The tail lights are $1,200 each... and just right there for a pissed off thief to bash in.

All I can say is that if they steal my tailgate, that they leave the damper.
