To my surprise, the dealership failed my truck for state inspection today because of a mysterious crack in my left tail light. The crack is barely noticeable and seems to be inside of the lens, I can't even feel it from the outside and never noticed it before, it can only be seen when the light hits it from the right angle. They quoted me $1,600 to replace . Seems like an easy DIY job but could use some guidance on the part number I need or where to source. Truck is a 2021 Tremor Lariat with LED lights and blindspot sensors.

If you want OEM, then check with Benny at @LevittownFordParts.com here on the forum.

There are some cheaper aftermarket versions on Amazon and eBay. Here's a link to one on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Lathsy-Compa...&sprefix=2020+ranger+tail,aps,157&sr=8-8&th=1

You'll need to move the Blind Spot sensor from the old assembly to the new one.

1-How in the hell does that "invisible" crack fail inspection?! Is the taillamp not working?
2-How convenient of them to offer such a great deal for repair?
3-Is this who they think they're talking to?

I'd go to another garage for inspection...and don't mention the crack...if your taillamp works, then it passes inspection...

Yeah, I'd go to another station and make sure it's a cloudy/overcast day. ?

I'm all for safety but man that's really being nit picky. But that's how these places make their money and I'm sure they catch a fish every so often. ?‍♂

It is ridiculous. They claim it’s a state guideline and out of their hands but I’ll be trying another shop regardless. They at least agreed to take the $35 inspection fee off my bill. New Hampshire may have a system for inspections failing where other shops can see a previously failed inspection in the computer but I’m not sure. If it passes inspection, I probably won’t bother replacing but really don’t want to deal with the hassle again.

Wow that would suck if it's been logged...is there any recourse to correct the fail? Such a minor crack probably still water tight and can hardly affect light output...

Long shot but maybe you can make friend with another 5G owner nearby and do a temp swap? A six pack oughta do it...

Oh hell yeah, but I would require a case of beer. You would be doing the swapping. But alas you are too far away. Great idea!!

I've done some tapping into my taillamps to power my trail lights...it turns out to be stupidly easy to remove...two bolts and unclip harness...that's why it's so easy to steal...

As much as I love(d) NH when I was a resident, it's car-related stuff could get weird.

I'm guessing it's probably gotten weirder (the kindest word I can think of) since the southern half of the state (where my family and I hailed from since before the Civil War) has been inundated by unhelpful Bay Staters..... An inundation so severe it caused the Old Man of the Mountain to give up the ghost 20 years ago.

TIGGERED!

Mine has the same crack, but on the P/S. It's been there since delivery. I failed to notice it when I took them off to have them tinted, and by the time it was noticed, it was too late to try and warranty it due to them being sanded for tinting. Doesn't affect anything, no water has gotten in there, and the light works fine. Crack is only visible when lit. I have an extra set of tail lights I bought used to replace the tinted ones if I ever trade the vehicle in.

Interesting. I’m thinking mine could have been there all along and went unnoticed until now. Definitely frustrating.
