And I was just praising my dealer. About 2k miles ago I had the truck in for new tires and oil change. Today I was washing it and noticed these fairly deep scratches on one of the wheels. One pic is with my hand behind it because the phone was having a hard time focusing.
I remember when I got the truck back, there was thick white crap all around the edges of all wheels. I assume it was the junk they use to lube the tire to help it onto the rim. It easily cleaned off. Then I find this. It's hard to see unless you look closely. But now that I know it's there, I am a little pissed. A slip of the air wrench?
I hate to mention the technician was a girl.

I'd personally try to remain calm. Give them a call, see what, if anything, they can do.

If they won't do anything then know they can likely be repaired for a hundo, hundo and a half. Or you can contact your Internet friends with a full set of sport wheels who can sell and ship just one for a fellow Internet friend.

Let me know, I'm that Internet friend.

Being I used to do this for a living years ago:

That is from not paying attention (on the last lug not removed)

It appears that the last lug nut was removed from (6 O'clock) position.
Wheel fell outboard while Impact Gun was still (In-hand) and jammed still spinning socket into the groove. --- (\) Wheels tend to move to this position with the Lugnuts Removed.

I found it best to remove the 12 O'clock position last and place my other hand on the wheel to guide it to a resting position, plus take it slow on the last lugnut, because SOMETIMES there can be so much force the wheel will drop off the vehicle, which is the reason for the secondary hand to guide that momentum.

I have seen sprained wrists trying to catch a falling tire / wheel with one hand that is also holding the impact gun.

This is a experience thing,

Yes, you should be pissed, but 2k miles later is a hard sell. The dealer may of may not admit fault and cover the repair. You can buy a touch-up vile of Ford Magnetic Gray #J7 / 7325 touch-up paint for less than $25 from the dealer or from any of several on-line shops that carry Motorcraft parts and do it yourself. That's probably what the dealer would do anyway. They're not going to have your wheel repainted by a paint shop.

I am sure touch up would make it much less noticeable, but they are some pretty deep scratches.

I appreciate that. I am not sure it's worth doing anything more than letting them know. If it took me 2k miles to notice, I am pretty sure nobody else would notice. I have to go back for a state inspection next week. I'll point it out then.

I hate that they use impact wrenches on lugs and have asked several times for them to use sockets but of course a no go because they are too time consuming. This would be solved to do the rotations myself but not convenient or time effective. One time I had a front wheel scratched when a technician at Discount didn't take off the balancing weight but slid it to a different point on the rim but they wouldn't do anything about it. At least on the Ranger they can balance them from the back. I've been tempted to take pics of the wheels and truck before a service and show the advisor as proof before the job but have never taken time to do it. It's frustrating when employees are so rushed that they can't take a little extra time to try and prevent damage to a vehicle. I would take it back and at least see if they will do anything for you. Keep us informed as to the solution.

I guess I can't necessarily blame the female tech, I suppose it could have have happened on a previous tire rotation.

I'm not into fancy wheels BUT I am into "It's your truck and your money".

What airline tec said makes the most sense (plus his considerable amount of real experience). I use a pneumatic impact wrench at home and I can easily see what he said happening. It spins fast, has decent weight to it, takes a moment to stop, and if it even popped off of that lug, the weight of it would bring it to that location and the last rotations would make it hop around to make erratic scratches like that.

And this could happen to anyone because most simply don't care. =(

As others have said, let them know that this was clearly done at that time and you just want them to be aware that it leads to disgruntled customers. And take pics of each rim the next time and inspect them before you leave the dealer (I did mark mine with a sharpie to see if they rotated them on the first time, but now just do my own rotations because I'm an old fart who likes to play with air tools). =p

The touch-up paint is the easiest route to go and I think I've seen them on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/ford-j7-touch-up-paint/s?k=ford+j7+touch+up+paint

Good luck! =)

You may want to double check your door sticker for your paint code:

Ripping grand yarn: "... Yeah, I was pulliin' a Taco out of a crevice in Moab, and started a rock slide. We both got out okay, but some of the falling rocks scratched my wheel..."

Now I know why she left the white goop all over it! Draw attention away from the scratches.

Or.....you could scratch the other 3 wheels and tell everyone it's a matched set from the factory.......
