I use POR-15 and have very good luck with it. Wear rubber gloves though, if you get it on your skin it does not come off.

That's negligible surface rust. If you just spray it with Fluid Film, you'll be more than good, and it's a lot less work. Might have to do it yearly.

I hate to go down this rabbit hole again about rust, undercoating, and preventive maintenance but here we go.....
When we buy a brand new vehicle we think we're free of doing anything to it for a long time because it's new, but just the opposite it true. It's the equivalent of bringing a new born baby home from the hospital. You can't wait a year to start feeding a baby, it starts the second the pull in the driveway, with both a new born baby and a new vehicle.
In a perfect scenario a vehicle should be undercoated the day you buy it, and kept undercoated regularly. It's not a perfect world, I know, but getting it done before the first oil change should be your goal.
Now on to products......
NEVER undercoat or try to hide rust or remove rust with anything that dries, period. Doing so only traps the rust and the moisture in the rust and makes it worse. If you have rust just starting you want to use something self healing like Fluid Film or P B'laster Surface Shield. But because we waited too long to undercoat, eventually the rust will still win, all we can do slow it down.
My famous line to customers when I used to undercoat professionally was....... For every dollar and hour you spend washing & waxing the paint we should be spending two dollars and two hours caring for the underside.
RepairGeek is YouTube's go-to on all things rust/undercoating/rust converting testing. He's the Project Farm of the rust prevention.

As far as car washes and undercoating goes, I'm not regimented enough to carry them out on a regular basis.
I rarely keep a vehicle long term and they are tools. Nothing more.
So if they look junky as they age, so be it, Someone out there loves junky, it will find a new home, or a wreckers. Doesn't matter to me once I've moved on.
Last time I bought a new vehicle, which I kept even though I bought the Ranger, was in 2003. This Ranger will most likely be my last "new" vehicle. I took very good care of the Mountaineer and plan to do the same with the Ranger. If I gotta look at it, I want 'purty'!

"Undercoating" covers a wide range of products and a lot of them are very bad. Some will destroy your truck. Fluid Film is just lanolin which is oil from sheep wool. It'll dissolve some rust, but mostly just arrests it an keeps it from getting worse. Won't hurt anything

This thread made me laugh because I just had a dream I was underneath my truck while it was on a lift and I was going to town spraying Rustoleum.
But seriously, I had an old 80 something F-150 with quite a few bad rust spots in the bed and elsewhere. I got some stuff called Rust-Mort and it worked pretty well. IIRC, you brush it on liberally, let it sit, hose it off, let it dry and then paint or fluidfilm or whatever.
