this is why I'm OCD about always locking infants or small animals in the car when I leave for extended periods. When I come back and the car's locked, I can coax them into unlocking the door. Don't you carry a sat phone? I always keep one in the bed in a waterproof container. I also tape a small hammer above the lock attached to a string dangling outside the door. If the car randomly locks itself, I just pull the string and the hammer hits unlock. If you did that this wouldn't have happened to you. Sorry you weren't prepared for this contingency. I'm glad I've never smashed my window with a rock. Sorry dude.

I used to have one of those magnetic "hide a key" boxes under the bumper/frame years ago. I know the XLT I ordered still uses an actual key (with a chip in FOB). I bet I could just duplicate the key part in the same event as this, and hide that?? The door still has an actual key hole, so a key would be cheaper than the key pad in my case

I have not done it yet but that is what I am planning to do. As some have suggested on here, can go to ACE Hardware and have a regular key made cheap to open the driver's door on the XLT. It would only be used to open the door because I believe a chipped key is needed to actually start the vehicle.

the laminated glass is there for a reason with the airbags.
with regular tempered glass, if an airbag deploys, the glass goes and then the support for the airbag is gone, and therefore your protection as well.

I remember a number of years ago as a VFF, trying to extricate a guy from a rolled over Durango, and it had these super strong windows. literally an axe was bouncing off of them. Definitely standard glass breaking tools were not working.
but, the bonus to the driver was the cab wasn't crushed in either from the extra support to the A and B pillar.

Fascinating. But hmmm, that's sketchy. How are we to exit, then, in an emergency? It sounds like the standard glass break tools won't work.
I like the idea of being able to exit an ELECTRICAL window if the door can't be opened. That's why i was so sad to give up the manual features of my '97 Ranger.

That’s why I went with the optional tempered glass when I had the window replaced, not only because it was cheaper but also because it’s very easy to break if I had to get out quickly!

I used safety/aviation wire to keep my spare key held in place. Just run the wire through the hole and wire it to whatever you want. I had a magnetic key box fall of about 15 years ago. It was on my K5 Blazer which saw a lot of off-roading. I didn’t realize it was gone till I needed it lol. Thankfully it was a lot easier to get into.

This is why even with a smartphone app the optional Securicode keypad is well worth the additional $95. I don't have the keypad on my 2019 and I really miss it. I ordered it on my 2022.

There must be something wrong with mine, it eats batteries like nothing else. I removed it from the truck, it sits in a drawer, nothing touching it, leaning on it or depressing any buttons. yet within a year I have gone thru three batteries. It would be my luck if it were still stuck to the truck that the day I need it the battery would be dead, again.

My phone was inside the truck, so no way to use the APP.

An Aggie would of broke the glass then used the phone to u lock it. ?

I know the truck has an auto re-lock feature, where if you unlock the truck and do not open AND close the door within a few minutes it will lock all of the doors. I was cleaning my truck in the driveway and had all four doors open with the stereo on. Turned off the ignition but left the doors open for a bit, closed all of the doors and went in to get a bite to eat and when I came out the truck was locked. There is an adjustable time delay for the relock, don't remember if you can disable it or not. I believe it is in the BCM module under 'Auto relock time'

If I had to drive with no window I would prefer the rear to be out, in this case.

I had know idea on cost. Those rear windows are factory tinted and the glass place said very hard to get, said I should’ve broke the front passenger side…..would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, I got in regardless lol

After my incident, I tested this theory out multiple times with no luck. The truck always stayed unlocked until I physically locked it. If there is such a function, maybe it only works randomly on my ride lol

I had one of these made at a local locksmith and keep it hidden outside the truck should the keypad ever fail.

Below are the instructions for programming the locks. Reason #397 to have a keypad. They can be purchased and programmed for $150-$200. I recommend talking to your dealer first. The initial syncing to your truck must be done thru a dealer, after that you can put in your own code. Some won't program a unit not bought thru their parts department, some can't or won't at all. Shop around. ~1/3 the cost and exponentially less aggravation than a busted window. Also, allows you to lock the truck while it's running; while doing a quick in-out at the C-store for a beverage, for instance.

Recently had my keyless entry keypad programmed. Dealer wouldn't do it unless it was on the truck. I wanted to make sure it worked after programming before sticking it on the truck, but nope, they wouldn't do it that way. I bought my own (genuine Ford part #; I think cost around $85, I had it a couple months before getting around to having it programmed), they charged me $110 to program it.

Edited to add: Hard to say how long it took them to do the programming. I was there from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. I was having "The Works" done and yearly inspection in addition to the keypad programming.
