I guess in this economy people are looking for any way to help make a buck. It sounds like a good idea and even covered by insurance kind of like an Air BNB but for parking.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/renting-driveway-easy-side-hustle-123309891.html

Looking for a side gig in this volatile economy?

A little extra cash can go a long way, with just about everything being more expensive these days.

There’s a side hustle trend gaining traction and no special skills necessary like being crafty or a good cook.

All you need is an empty driveway or parking space, and you can earn some pretty serious cash.

Anthony Viola owns a home with a driveway in Jamaica Plain that’s about a 10-minute walk to the Forest Hills T station, but he doesn’t own a car.
So that parking spot was sitting empty.

“It was just space going to waste. So actually my neighbor here asked if I would rent it out and then it turned out the tenants didn’t need the space, so that prompted me to start looking online to see if there were apps for these things,” explained Viola.

He found an app called “Spacer” that bills itself: “The Air BnB of monthly parking.” He says they were the first to contact him, and shortly thereafter found a renter for him.

Jeremy Zuker is the CEO of Spacer North America.

He says the number of people looking to rent out spots in Boston is up --- way up!

“I can tell you in the last several months - in the last 5 months - we’ve seen about a 70% increase in rentals in Boston. So it’s been a very busy market. Part of it’s weather-related. I think people are [anticipating snow,]” said Zuker.

He also says with parking garage prices in downtown Boston being so unreasonable, renting a spot is a great option for Boston commuters who don’t want to take public transportation to work, which can be unreliable and limiting. And hosts like Anthony can make hundreds a month.

“We think of it as it’s a piece of concrete - if you can turn it into a revenue stream, that’s great. So realistically we’ve had people easily making $200/month. In some places that are a higher density area, it can be higher than that and we’ve had rentals that have gone on for years so people are making $2,400 or more for years and that money can go to lots of different things that the host would like to use it for,” said Zuker.

Good idea?

So you buy a house and you're looking forward to the security of living in a nice community with neighbors that share your values.

Next thing you know, there's a revolving door of strangers next door at the AirB&B and strangers parking in the driveway.

Have you read about the rave parties being thrown at AirB&B's and then the next folks who rent the home getting meth poisoning?

I'm at a loss to understand how properties zoned as residential can be running these businesses?

Just seems wrong on so many levels.

Just seems like the freedom to do with your property as you see fit.

Well as much as I hate HOA's this is a plus for living in one. But I think most are talking about renting out 1-2 spots not making a parking lot out of their property. If my neighbor had 1 car parked there from a commuter it wouldn't bother me. Heck one of my neighbors now has a Jeep, a pickup and his work van (which is against HOA rules) parked in his driveway daily now. We have small driveways here so one is parked crooked hanging into the rocks and it looks terrible.

Yeah, all those things are fine.
But put up a US Flag, and the HOA will be on you like flies on shit.

You can also rent out your truck with or without you as part of it!

https://fetchtruck.com says you can make $19K a year with a pickup (I'd expect Soupie to make double that) =D

And I think https://dolly.com rents both you and your truck out! So kind of being like a dump hooker, in my case ...

Only if you didn't get approval first. This just keeps the area looking uniform and one neighbor not having a 50' pole while the other one hangs it off the roof. Trust me I hate HOA's but for the most part they keep the community from looking like a hodge lodge of everyones ugly taste. Last thing I want is someone painting their house purple or having all their junk scattered around their yard while mine is clean. I've seen enough homes (inside/out) through my career and trust me there's A LOT of people who live like slobs and I don't want them bringing my property value down.

I live about 1 mile from Gillette Stadium. Those of us with big enough yards can park cars for $30 a pop for stadium events. Gillette charges $60 a car now so folks don’t mind walking if the weather is nice enough. That place has stuff going on year round so alway plenty of customers.

The towns caught on last year and are limiting the number of “guests” you can have. They are taxing you for the parking services during events if they know that’s what you’re doing. Only in Masshole can you get away with doing that.

So you're ok with a methlab, human trafficking, etc. next door?

Be realistic.
Realistically, there's no guarantee that shit like that isnt happening next door to any of us... regardless of who parks there or who might rent it through air-bnb ?‍♀

Realistically, I recognize I have zero goddamn right to tell my neighbor how to live his life or what he can do with his property.

Realistically, if an individual wants to avoid as much crime as they can.. and don't want the inconvenience of having neighbors and all that comes WITH nieghbors... they're going to live in a location where their closest neighbor isn't even in earshot... not a city of howmany ever tens or hundreds of thousands of other people ?

Realistically, you do have a "goddamn" right. That's why wise people choose to live in an area where there are zoning laws, and laws enacted in the county, state and country they live in.

Don't follow those laws, and you can be prosecuted, as you should be.

What exactly gives me the right to tell my neighbor they can't rent a spot in their driveway? Zoning right?

While technically I think it's the town/county/state that has that right.. and not myself..

It upsets me that I come off as the type of Supreme dickhead who would tattle to the authorities about my neighbor making a little extra money.. that they probably NEED.. lol.

Nope. I mind my own business.

Yep, zoning.

I'd hardly consider renting an unused driveway space on private property a commercial venture. If there's folks out there that believe it's reasonable to consider such a thing as a commercial venture and would literally seek prosecution for such an action than I have more fear for humanity's future than I ever have.

Please don't pay the neighbor kids to mow/ rake your lawn or walk your dog... your neighborhood probably isn't zoned for that shit. I don't wanna see anyone face litigation..

Geez I didn't think this would turn into an argument about someone simply parking 1-2 cars in their unused driveway! ?‍♂ I could see if they had their whole yard full of vehicles but my God I have better things to worry about than my neighbor parking a car for some extra cash. There's a lot of damper-less people still out there who need help ya know!?
