“They’re a joke. Anyone can do this.”

Stewart Copeland quote from the documentary The Police in Montserrat.

I wanted to start a Ranger5g drum thread and the quote is perfect as the first order of business is to show off the Copeland 40th anniversary snare I was able to score a couple days ago.

Pretty much the same signature snare Tama has made for the last 20 years with a few changes… the original badge is relocated one “bay” to the right… a new badge with Stewart’s sig and the anniversary dates is added… the vent hole is relocated… and the chrome finish is ditched for an antique brass finish.

So glad to have managed to get this as there are only 200 made and I didn’t even realize it was a thing til about 10 days ago.

I know for a fact there are at least a few drummers here so let’s have some drum talk. ?

I have this set. Played off and on since high school but never had my own set. This was an early pandemic purchase and it's been great!

My style is heavy metal/rock. Especially working on my double bass playing, and jamming along with my favorite songs. Slayer if I want a workout or more groovy stuff (e.g. Clutch) if I'm in the mood for that.

Some e-kits, nice. I've never had any electronic drum gear and my knowledge is limited to bashing on them at Guitar Center. I can never understand how anyone can play the cymbals and make it sound good. If I ever needed an e-kit for quieter playing/practice I would go with the metal cymbals with the holes in them (can't remember who makes those).

You're not wrong. For solo practice it's OK, but I wouldn't want to play with e cymbals when other people are listening. But in general I'm less picky with my drum sound than with my guitar setup (also in the picture). My main instrument has always been the guitar, with drumming as a side gig.

Hoping my kids will pick up guitar or drums so we can eventually jam together.

Personally, Im not fan of E-kits that much. However the tech for these have come a long long way. You cant beat good acoustics, but acoustics cant come close to the play ability of electrics. I throw headphones and play at 3am with neighbors sleeping if I desire. Most Acoustics that sound good are on triggers these days.
This is a new Roland kit

You changed your Avatar.
I had no idea Netflix had a show like that, does not surprise me though. Netflix will dramatize paint drying.

Funny you mentioned that. Since I was in high school been mixing sound as a hobby. As a side gig ended up doing it off and on for the better part of 45 years and doing some amazing live shows. Got about 20K of equipment in my garage still. I can light up the neighborhood ? Early on in the late 70’s started playin with drum triggers. Also have a Simmonds drum enhancer that is technically a museum piece now. That’s when the real fat sustained concert drums came into being. There is really no artificial sound that you can make that sounds like a full kit, mic’d and run through triggers.

My hearing now is shot from years of high decibels from that, machinery, and just getting old.

Picked this up in July and it was not working. Tried to fix, no luck. Sat on the floor in the garage till last week when my wife decided to take it and get it fixed without telling me. I don’t deserve her.
