Hey guys, just went to the car wash today to try to get all the mud off from my driveway. I noticed what I at first thought was dirt but is actually some rust starting to form above the passenger side rear axle. IT seems to be some kind of tube support? If your looking at the rear tire it’s pretty much behind it is the best way I can describe it besides the pic. Anyways, I’d like to get a head start on fixing this as the truck only has 7200 miles. Any recommendations for paint to cover this one I clean it? I know next to nothing about paint and planned to wool wax or fluid film the underbody but that’s gotta wait for now.

I'm confused as to how or why your frame is a glossy gray color? Unless I'm finally losing my eye sight...
(Inner mental breakdown)

Anyway, what I would do is

1) Use a wire brush and some course grit sandpaper
2) Use a rust reformer/rust-to-primer converter, then apply a couple layers of mild or low gloss black paint once dried.
3) Let cure then throw some fluid film and monitor it for a while.

I see a few other small spots that look like rust on the frame in that picture. I second the question on the gloss gray paint.

Thanks guys, it is black, i just noticed how grey it looks in the picture as well, had to go out to double check that. Maybe because of the lighting in my garage and it was still wet? Ill definitely look into that, probably will pick up some rust reformer and some automotive paint then. I wasn't sure if I had to use a special type of automotive paint, looks like then just the normal automotive stuff will do?

Pretty much.
You could use POR15 but in my opinion that's a bit much, Maybe if you had significant rust and and entire weekend...

I personally use this for the rust converter/reformer

I'm not gonna link to the brushes or paint, you can easily find paints, metal brushes/sandpaper in just about any hardware, autostore, Walmart, menards, ect.

I see all sorts or hints at rust and paint needing touch up work in my Ranger. Sadly I feel like it would be playing an unwinnable game trying to prevent every single instance of rust from happening as I’ve owned and seen trucks rust and rot themselves into pieces after years of plowing and just normal winter driving. Think I’ll just try my best to wash the undercarriage after every snow event we have and keep it clean as possible. Prevention and obsession are different worlds

Yeah I understand completely, I thought I moved far enough north in michigan where they at least used a blend of salt and sand, but still all salt where I live. I am currently on well water that is extremely hard do to sodium/salt content, so I'd rather not wash it at home (assuming it wasn't winter). I end up not washing it often, especially the underbody, as there isnt great options around me for auto washes and I am worried that something caught in the brushes will just beat up against the truck and put in a bunch of scratches. (happened to a family member on a perfect condition mercury marauder). I probably will try to get wool wax in later summer, as that stuff is hard to wash off compared to krown/fluid film. I do have a couple bottles of fluid film i spray in the frame drain holes every now and then as well.

Definitely do you man, I keep my truck cleaner than many others I see, I personally would drive myself crazy trying to be a perfectionist with my truck so I try to just let it go and (for me) be a little realistic in my expectations. Being my truck is 3 years old and showing minor rust in the same areas is definety discouraging but I’ve driven some real rust buckets so this is quite the improvement lol but for sure I’ll be keeping an eye out for anything major

I’ve been using this as soon as I see anything, then every so often I go under and section by section hit anything with a speck of rust.

3 New England winters with the rust reformer touch up every spring. I don’t spend more than an hour or 10 bucks a year on this. I did get some runs this year whoops!
