It is supposed to be there. Why?
I am sure the engineers might know. Or the bean counters.
But many people cover it with a putco grill cover.
Yes there is a specific cover if you have the adaptive cruise control.
And even in chrome color if you wish.
Or go with another brand. There are other brands but putco being the one i am more familiar with.

No offense to people who put the Putco or M2M lower down there, but for the same amount of money you could put a decent quality light bar in that spot, something that could be useful. Just about every 20" light bar will fit down there and the brackets can be secured using existing factory trim screw holes.

Ok, the rest of the story! Rt 495 was milled for repaving back during the summer months. After they milled it they did a lousy job of cleaning up the debris. Because of covid it stayed that way for about 5 weeks before they got the sweepers out there because of complaints and cracked windshields. My front hood has about 6 nice nicks that need touch up too. I’m pulling that grill and repainting it this summer as well.
