Question about front bumper

So I looked in the gap of the bumper and can see the intercooler. I was wondering if there was supposed to kind of protection guard there? I never really paid attention til now and just a few days ago I ran over broken tire debris.

Well then, it is supposed to be there. So when you are all ate up , and run over tire debris, it goes out the bottom without damaging your power steering pump.

Normally I do my research on stuff I'm looking into but something as simple as the question I was asking shouldn't be a crap reply. I was looking at pictures and couldn't really tell. That's why I asked.

It is supposed to be there. Why?
I am sure the engineers might know. Or the bean counters.
But many people cover it with a putco grill cover.
Yes there is a specific cover if you have the adaptive cruise control.
And even in chrome color if you wish.
Or go with another brand. There are other brands but putco being the one i am more familiar with.
