what do you use to be able to see your Ranger instrument panel?
Hi Paul,

Ip is far enough away that it is not a problem to see all but the tiny stuff.... Then I would need reading glasses but not while I am driving....

Best,
Phil

I remember when my father had cataract surgery about 15 years ago they offered him the option of one eye short vision the other long. After a while you brain adapts and you end up with acceptable long and short sight, some people never adapt however so they trialled it with glasses before the procedure.

Barb does most of the driving. I have birth defects. I’ve been told the big E is 20/800. I don’t know, I can’t read it. I can get to 20/60, which is a doc’s note minimum in KS to drive. I don’t drive at night. Winters and evening events limit what I can do socially because of short daylight hours. Cataract surgery will help my misshapen cornea, but not my nystagmus. I simply can’t hold my eye still. I can’t read street signs. To read, I take my glasses off, and put things about 3” away. I had Toric lenses for many years, but it got to the point I could not read even with glasses over them. Same with the computer. It’s really hard to use one anymore. I use a phone and tablet because I can hold them very close. I’ve had poor vision my whole life, so I have learned to adapt. I don’t know anything different. Life is still good for me. I can drive in daylight and have a clean driving record. I just have to manage my driving and drive within my abilities. I’ve been able to do amazing things, so I really don’t see it as a disability. I just have to work differently to accomplish things. I too am caring for aging parents. One has stage 4 Parkinson’s and one is diabetic with 15% functioning kidneys. We all have life hit us at times, but as this thread shows, we also can have amazing resilience too. I thank God for the opportunity He has given me in this world. I hope I can still help others including some here on this forum.

Your nystagmus probly been there since you were a little guy! Thus the 20/60 best corrected vision. mis-shaped cornea?.......lotsa astigmatism or keratoconus? If keratoconus a hard contact lens can flatten the cone some.......some improvement of vision.........the nystagmus will still keep ya down.

I got monovision when I got lasik in 2010 and it took a year for my brain to figure it out. Not sure I would do that again but so far have not needed more lasik. I do have to use reading glasses occasionally because as I age presbyopia gets worse.

Astigmatism is severe. I have to choose where I get lenses made. Wally, Success Vision, Costco, Sam’s and places like that won’t touch my Rx. Glasses for me are pretty expensive. I just know that and plan accordingly.

I've had good success with online RX glasses...have you tried any?

Have you had cataract surgery yet? If not.....get your pre-Lasik Keratometry numbers from who did your Lasik. Gonna need those to correctly calculate your IOL at the time of cataract surgery. Just a heads-up!

They probly don't have your records then. If anyone fit contact lenses for you they will have them. If you have an old pair of glasses that will help. If none of those are availble we've went as far as getting old pictures from even high school wearing your glasses to guess the power of your glasses. Anything is better than nothing. IOL=Intraocular Lens.

pretty nearsighted then. An old pair of glasses will help! We had a lady from Mankato, KS that needed cataract surgery. Had her mother send pics of when she was in high school. We nailed the IOL with that pic. She was very happy!........and so were we!
