Got a wild hair and coupled with never finding my happy place with the truck, I traded it in on a Golf R today.

Thought I needed a truck. Remembered fondly my old 1998 Ranger. Liked the overseas Wildtrak that I drove so ordered one in December 2018. 6 months wait, lots of complaints from owners while I waited and I sort of had a bad feeling. Experience with my dealer was terrible. Never found the truck comfortable even after I spent money modifying the seats..got better, but not great. Hated the brakes. Hated the auto-start stop. Hated the turbo lag when getting back on the gas. Electronic gremlins, recently had an almost 1 month wait to get a new BCM and code written to fix an interior light issue...Just too much. Real buzzkill. Nuisances if I really used the truck as a truck, but it was ultimately just a mode of transportation.

The Golf R fits me perfectly. Incredible range of motion with the seat and the steering wheel. Amazing how much front seat room there is (and still a lot of room in the back seat). a 6'10" person could probably easily fit. Great handling and a manual! It's a mature platform near the end of the cycle. I hate all the increasing safety systems, but it's only going to get worse (better for some). Manuals will be going away as well. DSGs are quicker, but manuals are more fun to me.

I bought our Rogue from the same dealer and the experience was night and day difference. I got a fair deal, with none of the shenanigans from the Ford dealer.

Most here love their Rangers. Wish that was me..but no sense pissing and moaning about it..anymore :)

Enjoy your trucks!

Aloha and Happy Holidays.

It is too bad you were not pleased with your truck but it seems that you have found a vehicle that you are happy with. Life is too short to put up with something that you are not satisfied with so I'm glad you are now happy with your new Golf.

Best wishes.

It seems like there were/are a few intermittent bugs with some Rangers and unfortunately yours was one of them but it's better to be happy than drive something you're totally miserable with.

I had a similar situation as yours when I bought my 2016 Tacoma. I hated it from the beginning but I was stuck with it because I need a truck and did not like any of the other options available. I was very nervous buying my Ranger because it was the first year back in NA but took a chance after hours of reading on here and I'm glad I did! :inlove: Good luck with your new Golf R,hope you have better luck with it.

Oh...Just be glad you didn't buy a Tacoma and were on Tacoma World because you'd be getting all sorts of nasty comments for your decision lol.;)

Shoot man if you don’t need a truck.. I’d much rather drive Golf R everyday than my Ranger. Don’t get me wrong I love my Ranger, it’s my baby.. what I didn’t understand is how people say the Ranger is “fun” to drive.. it’s a pickup truck that has decent power. A Golf R though.. that’s definitely fun to drive! Congrats

The Golf R has always been a cool hatch. I miss the little hot hatch I used to own. Hope you enjoy mike!

Appreciate the nice comments and well-wishes. I've always wanted a GTI...an R was a little bit wishful thinking. Went in to look at a GTI SE but hated the color nor fond of the sunroof. Loved the driving experience. They had a white R with the manual and a beautiful blue with the DSG. Wish it was the opposite, but the white looks great. Handling and acceleration...well..it's fun :) But comfort-wise, for me it's off the charts. By far, the most comfortable seat I have ever been in. Perfect driving position. Of course, it's a cloudy and rainy day today. Great fun and capable car for Hawaii. Even better if I move to the mainland to a place with some fun roads.

@MTB-BRUH, I think lots of folks get a great bit of enjoyment from driving their trucks. I remember my 98 Ranger was great fun. Enjoyed it everyday. Loved my old Bronco II as well Both Fun in a different way..hard to explain..just a good feeling when driving.
I've been a car/truck guy since young but just couldn't get on the same page with my Ranger.

Yeah I kind of agree with that I had a couple of Corvettes in the last few years really enjoyed them but I always had a truck with it realizing I only put about 5 to 8 thousand miles a year on any vehicle car I found it it hard to own two cars so so the ranger covers my needs. I had a 2012 Mazda MX-5 2016 Fiat 124 2005 and 2008 C6 Vettes. all while having a 2016 TRD sport I think I got the sports car pretty much behind me although the new C8 looks inviting

You can't beat the Golf platform, they usually hit a sweet spot for 99% of daily driving situations, when they are running right lol. I scrapped an 07 Rabbit with 190k when I got my Ranger, it was leaking oil from the vac pump, slipping gears, heat only worked on full blast etc. Time had caught up to it I guess, it held together to about 180k with no issues or major repairs necessary, then went quickly downhill. I'm watching for a Mk4 or Mk5 GTI for a good price for a second car.

Golf R is an awesome car. One of my employees drives one and it is a fantastic ride. Of course he has destroyed about 8 tires on potholes, but hopefully Hawaii has better roads than the NorthEast. Enjoy!

My mom, who is not a car person in the least, always talks nostalgically about the Golf she and my dad had back in the 80's, back when it was called a Rabbit. Unfortunately, my birth interfered interfered with it being practical any longer, and they sold it to buy their first minivan. They regretted selling it, and actually bought it back about a year later. As much as they loved the car, it still wasn't practical for them (they had bought some property, and one of my earliest memories is of them trying to haul trees in this Rabbit), so they ended up selling it again.

Incidentally, the vehicle that they replaced it with the second time was my Dad's first pickup: a Dodge Dakota (1988?). That pickup was a major influence on me choosing to get a small pickup, an '03 Ranger that is still my daily driver, as my first vehicle.

Anyway, glad you could find the right vehicle for you. Have fun!

I had the fun of having a job that sent me to Germany for work. Over an 8 year time period, I spent about 35% of my time in Germany staying in hotels as far as possible from our worksite. I love to drive. Even better, driving as fast as legally allowed and safe to go. I can vouch fo the Gulf and the Gulf Diesel as some of the best business ‘normal’ rentals to get that the company would not complain about.

Good Luck
