Greetings. I find myself in need of a new pickup. Tinworms got to the frame of my H3T. I'm a Ford guy at heart with 8 Fords since 1978. I went through the Gen 6 Bronco Reservationist and MIC Top drama but will never part with my 2022 Black Diamond. My last Ford product was a 1999 F150 work truck. My first Ford truck was a 1987 Ranger STX I bought new in February 1987. I guess I'm a veteran of the Ranger, sort of...

A slightly-used 5G Ranger XL is on my replacement list. I've found a few so far, so I thought I'd join here and get up to speed on the 5G. Just need a work truck, nothing fancy.

If the 5G is as good as the New Bronco, then I'm all in. The 2.3L EcoBoost is a beast of motor IMO.

Most importantly, I have secured buy-in from my wife to replace the H3T. You know how that goes. :sunglasses:

My only advice is to look at the "build date" of the vehicle 1st. Don't buy a 5g that was build before November 2022. Ford made a change to the CDF drums to correct a stupid mistake. They began using hard anodized drums a few months earlier. But I still wouldn't buy 1 from before Nov. '22. I would like to be certain that ALL the bad transmissions they had in stock were used up. After that,,, I highly recommend getting a tuner. It's the least expensive way to completely change the character of the vehicle. You won't regret it.

- Good luck

*mine was built in June '22 so,,, ⏰ 💣

Welcome, I have a 22 SCREW Sport 4x4 with a little over 98,000 miles on it. It's reliable and makes 100 mile round trips to and from work anywhere from six to seven days a week depending on the work schedule. I have never looked at when the build date was on it, I got it in the middle of March 22. I just keep it maintained, drive it and enjoy it. Currently trying to figure out which style aftermarket bronze wheels would work best with the factory size tires and not to distant in the future a 1 inch taller tire later. Just my two cents. Enjoy!🙂

Welcome,

Like Steve above, I have a 2019 Ranger. No issues and has been running great for 88,000 kms, “bad transmission“ and all. ;)

90,740 mi on my almost trouble free 2021, build date 4/21. I had the HVAC blend door done and the transmission software reflashed under warranty, I would thoroughly test drive any year Ranger that you are considering. High miles is a good thing for 5G Rangers. From what I have read here over the years, trucks that are seldom used, overly aggressively driven or poorly maintained have the most problems

Thanks for the info. The one I have an eye on was built in May 2022. Funny, I've been on the Bronco Nation forum since 2021 and never heard of the CDF drum issue; I have a manual Bronco. So, you are saying don't buy any 2022 Rangers. T found the TSB. I will check with the Ford Dealership from which it is being sold about the TSB on the trans software.

The one I'm looking at was driven an average of just over 5,000 miles annually. It looks in great shape.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Ranger. But some transmissions do fail. A lot more failures occurred prior to the switch to hard anodized drums. Take good care of it and you should be fine. You'll see a lot of chatter about transmissions going bad. The only transmission posts you're going to see are from people who have had bad experiences. Nobody ever posts that their transmission was just fine today. The failures represent a smaller slice of the pie. But,,, I'm not happy that there are any failures at all. You can't tell me these fools are incapable of building a transmission that can last. #PlannedObsolescence

Yeah, nearly every car I've owned, regardless of manufacturer has had a TSB or recalls. I'm not worried about it, just something to check on.

If you buy that one, first thing I would do at minimum is a trans fluid flush and add a bottle of Lubeguard Platinum.

'21 here with over 90k trouble free miles on it. Only big issues I have heard about is the tranny. Thankfully, I have been spared.

I beat the sh*t out of mine and it runs and runs. Highly recommend these trucks. They are little work horses.

pound for pound dollar for dollar the Rangers are a great deal, rugged, workhorses that don't cost an arm and a leg to fix and are good on gas mileage. I owned a 2005 Ranger that is still on the road today! My current Ranger is a 2024 . Best money ever spent:sunglasses:

Buy any Ranger you find, as long as it's Race Red and a Scab! You can add the chain later! =p

By the way, welcome to the forum!

It's a great bunch that know everything about fifth generation Rangers and are helpful in solving any and all issues. =)
