Oil Leak. Help!

Hey dudes, adding a video to this post.

Summary:
Changed my own oil.
Mistakenly left gasket on from old filter (STP filter), put on the new filter (first time using OEM Ford filter), started the truck and oil spilled EVERYWHERE.
Removed filter, removed old gasket, replaced filter. Sprayed it down as much as I could with brake cleaner to get oil off.
Ever since then—about a week—oil has been leaking.
I removed the filter today to check gasket, it was fine. Put it back on.
Can’t figure out where leak is coming from! Could it be residual oil that’s still dripping from the spill?

Have you double checked you have the correct filter? It's late or id climb under my own and look but that looks to be directly beneath your oil filter. You said it's on tight, with a single gasket, so it shouldn't be leaking...

Could it be residual, that depends. You said you cleaned up I guess it depends how much got out with the double gasket on and how well you cleaned up afterwards.

Might be worth turning your wheel outboard and removing the rubber cover and having a look via the wheel well to see how much residual mess you have in there

Thanks Rich. I’ll check that tomorrow. I’m pretty sure I got the right one, but it won’t hurt to double check.

I did all that today: remove flap, turn wheel, check filter. I even removed it and cleaned the area as well as I could with a rag, then hit it with brake cleaner afterwards.

You’re right, it is right under the filter.

Is it the old gasket or the new one under it? They might both be trashed after getting squished together under the new filter and not sealing properly.

Filters are cheap, I vote new filter and gasket to be safe if you're confident this is the right size and it's tight, and if it's not you'll need a new one any way so...

Edited to add, it's video but that oil on the floor looks pretty clean IE NOT residual. Also points to new filter not sealing properly. That's my very non experienced aspiring Motorhead opinion.

There's some sharp VERY motorhead dudes on here that will be along in a few hours that aren't up all hours of the night with more, and probably better, suggestions.

I'd swap to a new filter, oem or not up to you.

Gaskets are easily damaged.

I wish we had “smell-o-vision”. Then we could tell if there was fuel in that oil.

Every time I change my oil I get a few drips for several days from residual oil from the little oil tray. This happens when I do it right. Pressurized oil can get into places that may take a week or two to finally find it way to the ground.

Keep an eye on it and watch the oil level to see if it drops. But I tend to think it is residual. A little oil will spread a long way. And you sprayed a pretty good quantity of oil out under pressure in 360 degree pattern (up, down, left and right) that probably ended up in places difficult to detect. It may very well be coalescing and puddling on the ground.

I'd give it more time, but carefully watch the oil level.

The Ranger takes a FL-910 motorcraft filter, I suggest you remove that one clean sealing surface on engine and lubricate the seal on new filter with clean oil and hand tighten
