Wrapped up the trip last night. 2350 miles round trip. This time with two people and a lot of gear the overall average MPGs were 22.7.
Fished the East Branch Fox River and Indian River near Steuben in the Upper Peninsula. Weather was amazing first two days and then coLC and rainy last few days. I learned that fishing the rivers/streams in the UP while wading is tough due to Alder lined banks and deadfall trees everywhere. I will return to the Indian. More room to fish, lots of trout and incredibly scenic.
On the way home we lucked into the lodging deal of the century and gave up camping for an amazing $12 a night stay at Fort Grayling, MI. Discovered that 110 year old Officer’s Club had 10 rooms above the bar available. The Fam Camp tent sites were $14 ? We opted for beds, restrooms and showers for $2 less per night ?
Fort Grayling was like a Park on the main post. We could sit on the Veranda sipping whiskey and smoking cigars while overlooking the lake. Already booking a week next year because it is just 5 miles from the Au Sable River, one of fly fishings holy spots. We got one afternoon in on the Au Sable. Rainy and cold so there were no other fisherman and just a few fish feeding.
I can’t believe this little secret never reached me in 25 years of service! A few pics of Fort Grayling O Club/Lodging and the Au Sable River are below.
