This just came across the wire, not sure if
any folks looking to buy a Bronco saw it or not, here you go !

Yeah there has been some stink on the bronco forums for a while but it’s probably overblown. At the end of the day the explorer st uses the 10R60 and seems to hold up fine. Supposedly that trans is still stronger than the one in the wrangler and no one seems to mad about that issue so it’s prob just a typical whine fest.

I know nothing about the 10R60 but does it shift better than the 10R80 and not lug higher gears? If so this might be why they decided to use it in the Bronco. More people will be using it for off roading and with all the GOAT modes that electronically change the shift points this might be a good thing. I'll wait and see what everyone has to say once they start getting theirs but after briefly looking into it I'm not going to stress about it just yet.

Besides there were A LOT of professional off road racers involved in the development of the Bronco. I don't think they would've opted for the 10R60 if they all thought the 10R80 was a better tranny. All have said they were very impressed with the way it turned out and some even said at first they thought it was going to be "gimmicky" but have now said they really love the GOAT modes and it helps even them be better.

Definitely explains the towing weight differences. Not sure if it will be the monster off-road beast some are hoping for.
Now the regular Bronco will probably be good but nothing special but with the Sasquatch package and the Bilstein shocks it is an absolute beast off road. Take a look at the Youtube videos from KOH where they really hammer them. Even the videos from regular guys posting their videos were saying it was so much smoother than their Jeeps going over the bumps especially at high speeds. The Badlands with the auto sway bar disco is awesome and it reconnect over 20 mph and reconnects when below.

The towing weight differences are because the suspension is tuned for comfort & off road performance instead of max payload. Using a transmission rated for a lower load makes tremendous sense for a vehicle designed around a lower gcvwr. Probably saves some weight which otherwise would be carried around for no reason.

As has been stated time and again, there are engineers (I call them propeller-hats :p ) who check this stuff out.
I'd prefer the overbuilt nature of a good toploader 4 speed or a C6...but hey...I'm kinda old school.

I'm sure the 10R60 will be okay.

The only transmission any future Bronco buyer SHOULD have a concern about is the 7 spd manual.

Brand new Ford-Getrag manual? Last time that didn't work out so well for some.

What I have discerned from my little amount of research is the 60 has a bit lower torque rating than the 80. With the tow rate of the Bronco being only 3500 lbs I don't see any problems there. The Bronco ain't a tow monster, and it dang sure ain't a road burner either.

Agreed. The new (2020) Explorer is rated at 5600lbs, and I've towed my travel trailer, and family of 4, all over the US with it, no issues at all. Comfortable at highway speeds, 8-12 MPG, great vehicle. If the 10R60 is good enough for that, it'll be more than fine in the Bronco.

Thanks Jacob, that should be enough proof for anyone.

Jim I think they designed it around the gearing too. All the models have different gearing which will help when you up the tire size. Look at the mpg ratings and ALL SAS models (4.7 gears) with the 2.3 are 18/18 where the Badlands non SAS is 18/17 which has 4.46. That one threw me for a loop as I'd of thought the non SAS Badlands would've been better than SAS.
