Tow/haul is great for a trailer, but I live where there are enough hills I don't think I'd want engine breaking and a roaring engine going down every hill without a load on my truck.
That's where S mode comes in handy. When we go up north and it's at 7,000' and a lot of hills and I drop it in S and most times I manual shift. You can control the speed much better that way without the engine breaking you get in tow mode. There's a really steep twisty road coming up to Jerome on 89A where this comes in really handy.

Here's an aerial view of what part of 89A looks like.

Very curious what the age of the OP is... I know it 'shouldn't matter', but maybe that would give insight into his....perspective.
There's a few "older" folks here and I don't recall any of them this upset over a new truck. Most of these things are easily fixed which have been pointed out to him. Just wait until everything goes EV. What'll he do then? :giggle:

That's the gist I was inferring; older folks are very set in their ways and don't like change. I get it, I really do. (I'm no spring chicken either) They spent most of their adult life doing things a certain way, and things worked fine for all those years from their perspective, so why does anything need to change?

If he hasn't bought a vehicle in over a decade, the reality he's facing is that a LOT of these features are a major change in the way most people are expected to drive anymore. Some of it mandated by the gubment, some of it due to consumer demand. ('ooh shiny cool feature I don't really need... gimmee!') As a car guy, I've seen this evolution over the decades since I pay attention to it as a hobby. For people that just 'want to drive' I can see how this could be culture shock in a lot of ways.

I will say, if he's not trolling us all, it's kind of interesting how candid he is on a public forum. Makes you wonder how many other people out in 'the wild' feel this way...

Either way, it makes for good entertainment, at the least. :p

This, and DakotaGuys post help to illustrate my driving practices with the Ranger. There are many options and none are best suited for all situations. Use the trucks computer controlled everything to your advantage. Want good MPG, leave it in D go easy on the skinny pedal. Quicker off the line then slip it into S. I actually like Tow mode going downhill for the engine breaking, then I put it back in S for going uphill. A/S/S off and on as it pleases me. 4WD for off road with a variety of transmission mode options. I use it all! And many times all in the same day! Sometimes even Tow mode while actually towing. Yay, me!

Never NEVER , not one time complained about performance or how to get there. .... Anybody who wants it to drive like an actual truck , in plain D ... The one for driving , is treated like a damn alien here .... How any actual truck person could defend that , and the need for a silly dipstick is beyond me .... Generation thing most likely... So might as well end it ... Moderator ! Please ban me from this "Love my ranger and everything about it or else " forum.... I can t self terminate , you gots to do it...
No…you need to hang around. You’re a sport knocker.
