Ok they had me till I noticed this...

First screen shot is them talking about cheap LEDs and reflectors lights, you get lots of unfocused light.

Second screen shot is them talking about expensive TIR lights, you get more focus and minimal unfocused light.

Ok...

I really like DD's stuff, but I can't ignore this. I'm not trying to call a company out.... but I am calling a company out. What kind of shenanigan's is this?

@Wes Siler what is your take?

Are you saying the second image has light spill also? It's because cameras adjust exposure. Do you see how beyond the circle in the first image the surrounding light is dead black? THe larger circle is significantly brigher than the ambient light. In the second image, the surroundign areas are exposed closer to the rest of the image, because there is less light spill.

I'd love to know if both examples were used at same distance.

If they don't do identical angle shot demonstrations, my first thought is this is being some sort of marketing bafoonery.

Even YouTubers have learned to do duplicate positioning comparison demonstrations.

Edit: I am not saying TIR does not perform better, I am questioning if they are trumping up the cards.

Just a great example of why looking at performance at ~10 feet is silly. Put these out on an open road and let's see what they do. In the case of DD, that's not much.

Lighting is a lot like the fitness industry. You make money by making things more complicated than they need to be.

The position matters less than a fixed exposure, but you potentially run into issues with difference in output.

What real light performance looks like:

Plenty of tight spot, good amount of flood without being so bright you can't see through it.

DD struggles to combine the two. It's either all short distance, or all crazy tight pencil spot. Neither is your friend.

For the record, my belief is anything not mounted low on a bumper is going to generate spillage. Roof mounted lights being the worst offenders. This is the very reason I modified by rack platform from 10 feet down to a little over 8 feet so my spot lights would no longer spill onto the hood and right in my line of vision.

Well according to DD this is old shitty tech.

Damn - and I really wanted to take a position of defense for DD, I believe they actually manufacturer in the USA, but man, marketing ploys will always push people like me away.

Just the natural result of living in a place where 99.9 percent of people see lights as jewelry, not a safety item. Can't blame a company for serving its audience.

id like to know if the big name brands in led lights actually use all USA components. My bet is the diodes are still from the chins.

Actually if I had to guess the high end companies may do Taiwanese or maybe Japan. I would like to think the do the diodes / circuit boards in house, but I kind of have my doubts.
