Hey fellow new ranger owners. Just bought new 2021 Lariat. Are the number and letter indicators on the gear shift supposed to have a light? It seems like they should when the lights are on. Hard to shift in the dark garage unless I look at the instrument panel. Maybe the light is broken? thanks in advance!

No. Only lights up on the dash display.

Should've ordered a 2019...now you don't have glove box damper, no folding head rests, no console tray and no lights for your shifter...?

its definitely a sign of whats ahead....
Interesting site, thanks for sharing that.

Seems strange that FORD didn't choose to light the shifter...I think even my old Jeeps had a light showing the gears there. Maybe they used the money they saved to install that helpful Ignition Off/On at every stoplight switch ;)

Who looks at the shifter when shifting gears?

Like seriously?

Count the clicks.

I shift an automatic transmission from park to drive over 200 times a night when I have to work. In the dark, without looking at the indicator.

If you must have an indication it's on the dash.

There were several things Ford omitted to cut costs and that was one of them. I guess a light bulb was going to send them into bankruptcy. The biggest head scratcher was the engine cover not being included. It looks so unfinished under the hood now without it.

I've had my Ranger for 2-1/2 years, and when I read the OP's post I really wasn't sure about the answer, had to think a bit.
I drove manual transmissions for many years and never had the numbers on the shifter light up. :giggle:

I do wish the gear indicator (1-10)on the dash was displayed in all modes and without having to turn it on every time, but even that just became a habit. No real problem.

About 85% of the bitching about our Rangers is stuff like this. The shift indicator is literally right in front of your face! This and “eww I felt the 10 speed shift” and “heaven help me is the amazing 2.3 the only motor I can get?” Etc. Just gets old.

Whenever mine arrives, I in tend to eventually find a wrecked 2019 and steel the bulbs and whatever other parts I need to bring back some illumination.

Kiss my ass ford, cheap asshats.
Now Now, Ford had to eliminate some 25 cent to 50 cent items to bring the cost down to their faithful buyers.
One could only guess at the final cost of our Rangers if these items had been left in the final build !!!

And, still, no factory tailgate damper !!!
Personally, I'd like to see a 6 way tailgate that converts to a queen size bed, with a nightstand that doubles as a beer fridge.

That's true, how could I be so dense.

Obviously $34,470.80 instead of $34,470.30 would have sent me walkin' out of that deal.
