How much weight can a closed tailgate support across it

The problem with my Ranger, and other PUs I guess, is the box is plenty wide for a 4' sheet of anything. But the space between the wheel wells is less than 44".
I've thought about a hitch receiver bed extender that is the same height as the wheel wells, but can't justify. I've wrapped all of my major DIY projects.
The few times I've hauled sheets I had to remove the GatorX folding box cover and lay the sheets at an angle in the box. Tie down was iffy and a real PITA.

The other option is trade your 2019 in on a 2024 or '25 Ranger, which have 48.2 in between the wheel houses

I'll stick with my 2019. If I really need to haul something wide I'll wait until the boat is on the lift and use its trailer.
....wondering where Ford found the extra 2"/side...

The 2024 and newer have a 2 in wider track, and the wheelbase was pushed out 2 in forward to accommodate a V6, while having the same overall length as the 5G.
