You cant get a tire shop to do a plug repair here in Commifornia, it's patch only.
I had my 19.5 RV tire pick up a nail here, roadside assistance truck operator would plug & patch it but not plug only, but as that was what I wanted I was fine with it. That tire was leak free for another 30K milkes until it aged out and was replaced along with the other 5.

I use plugs on my lawn tractor and have never had a failure.
And your lawn tractor is not doing 80mph down the freeway either, at least I hope not, if so I want a photo!! :)

plug is fine if done properly and used for an appropriate sized tread puncture , not debating that a patch is better, tire industry "propaganda" posits that a plug increases chance of a blowout - but doesn't say that mostly has happened from an underinflated tire caused by a slow leak. Given tps have been required since 2007 I think the tire industry advisement is a bit outdated.

It baffles me that y'all are driving around in $30-40k trucks and having a hissy over a $25 flat repair. Plugs are fine as a temporary measure, but they should be replaced with a proper plug/patch combo at the earliest opportunity. It's the only damn safety feature of your vehicle that has any contact with the road. Just fix it right.

Tire Repair | TIRE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
It baffles me that you perceive anything in this thread as a hissy, but I guess we all have different levels of triggering.

Stating your opinion of a plug as absolute fact, does not make it so. All I ask if for data to support the ineffectiveness or safety risk of a properly placed and installed plug, instead of parroting internet opinion from other un-supported opinion. If plugs are as unsafe as some pretend, there should be thousands of documented or anecdotal evidence. As is I've never experienced a plug failure, nor know anyone who has, nor reading any stories here from the "do it right" crowd.

The Tire Industry Association is what exactly? Are they owned or supported by tire manufacturers/retailers who's vested interest is in selling more tires, not losing those sales to a repair they have no benefit from?

Les Schwab in the PNW will do it for free.

Walmart (in Idaho) charged $16 for a patch on my recent road trip. Considering it was a Sunday and we were in the middle of nowhere, I was happy with that.

I'll plug for a traul repair. But once I get home I'll visit Discount Tire for a proper repair at no cost. Doesn't matter if you bought the tires there or not. Hard to beat free.

Thanks for the heads up as if you can't use or buy tire plugs in CA - then CO will undoubtedly soon follow suit - just like the adoption of CARB regs this year and many other CA regs. And in the near future Coloradans , at least those residing in front range areas will enjoy a $ .40 to $ .50 increase in petrol prices as the epa will reclassify the area as a serious air quality violator. "Tis a privilege to live in CO" might be a stretch nowadays.

I had one plugged then put back on my truck and spare put back in blace a couple years ago in WV. Cost me a 10 spot and a handshake.
We had a local shop back east that would do a tire repair for $10. The old guy that owned it would always pull a wad of cash out of his front pocket to make change. He could barely hold it as he had so much money every day from just doing tire repairs. lol Everyone in the area knew this and the place was always busy between that, tire sales and general auto repairs. It was truly one of the last local shops that gave you great service and at a great price.

Aye and those kind of guys/shops stand behind their work. There is a local shop here I use that's the same way. If they don't have it they will get it and they treat ya great! We need more companies like this!

The sad part is when the old guy died the sons sold out to a larger company. Needless to say it was run like any other corporate business where prices went up and service went down. This is why I hate Amazon so much. They destroy the little guy while getting everyone hooked on free & fast shipping. I try my best to not buy from them but sometimes there's no choice.

As far as the experts who work in tire or mechanical shops go, the Ford mechanic put my spare on last week when I had my wheel studs adventure. He then adjusted the air in my 3 other tires according to the door sticker. I asked if he noticed the door sticker was for 265/60-18, not the 285/70-17 that were on the truck. He returned a blank stare, with no words.

Then he told me the spare was only good for 50 mph, and that he also adjusted the air up to 50 psi. I asked what he based those decisions on, and he very confidently told me he's an expert and familiar with Rangers. Again I asked if he noticed that the spare was not factory and not 265/65-17. I told him it's a 275/70-17 Wrangler, it has R rating for speed (106mph) and the sidewall notes 50 PSI is the max pressure, it's certainly not safe or proper to inflate an unloaded cold tire to the max.

Licensed, fully qualified mechanic and "Ford expert". He lowered my Duratracs rated for 60psi max down to 38 from the 42 I was running, and increased my 50psi spare up from the 42 to 50.
