A tune, muffler, down pipe, intercooler and charge pipes would be safe. That should get you at least 350hp which is what the Focus RS 2.3 makes stock. Once you go over that the reliability can get a bit sketchy. The stock internals weren't designed to handle any more.
That's where I think I'm headed...
Want to eat some fast and furious cars but... catch and release. Would like to pass out some particle masks to vehicles that I leave in the dust..
Gets pretty competitive on the streets here in Denver metro... Best defensive driving practice I always do riding motorcycles and now with my Ranger is ride away from other vehicles... Never along side... Pass ... Go around to be ahead and away... Or drop back... Try to not have a vehicle next to you left or right.... Of course... That can't save you from getting rear ended like my wife and I ... Hit 3 times in 15 months... Vehicles gone and now own new because of idiot young drivers.

Are they high or just stupid? ?
Maybe add to your defensive driving list: leave an escape route when stopped...

Perceive both... I managed to make it thru my 20s and 30s driving partying doing all without crashing and burning.... Well maybe crashed on the black runs skiing...

I thought I read if you push the 2.3 to 400 hp or higher you are asking for the block to fail. I would think a good 93 octane tune with a down pipe, 3" exhaust, air box an intercooler/pipe upgrade would get you close to the 400 crank hp number. I also think I read the epa has gotten really aggressive going after the tuners for tuning for high flow down pipes that replace the factory cat.

Here we don't need an inspection for 10 years. I'll definitely ditch the cat and sell it for $10,000 or whatever they go for these days. Although the place I found that sells 93, sells it for $4.90 a gallon!

One thing to keep in mind is that an intercooler in and of itself doesn't add much HP on these trucks.

What it DOES do is prevent heatsoak and allow you to make power longer before the intercooler is saturated.

A better flowing intercooler may make a bit more power but that's secondary to diminishing heat buildup.

The charge pipes will give you a bit of a boost due to better flow.

That said, I do not have an intercooler installed but this is what I've gathered from reading the forums here.

I've read the pipes give a decent boost without changing the intercooler too. On the mustang I've read you need to upgrade it because after a hard run or to it gets heat soaked an loses effectiveness. The ranger's must be bigger or we would have heard of this problem too.

Phillip, if you really want your Ranger to live up to it's full potential the OTS tunes from a box aren't gonna cut it.

Run a Livernois (or any other box tune) Tune with full TBE, intercooler, intake, and pipes and you're gonna leave a lot on the table and waste a lot of money. An aftermarket turbo absolutely requires a good custom tune.

You'll want a custom tune to really do something. That tune will cost money as it will be done on the road or dyno preferably both. And as far as I know the only system with which to do that on the Ranger is HPTuners.

So you're gonna want to find yourself a local tuner you trust who supports HPTuners equipment and has Ecoboost experience. There are a few in the Denver area.

I'd suggest one that has their own dyno. That level of investment is a sign that they play at a higher level to me.

There's a dude up north I've got some experience with from my Subie days. If I were gonna tune my Ranger, even without mods, a custom tune from Harvey aka "the boost creep" up in Longmont is the only way I'd go. If I wanted an "import slayer" truck I'd start with talking to him about your mod path and tunes.

As far as the potential? Look at the EB Mustangs. The reliability ceiling has been determined there already. Full bolt on e85 with a tune should make you around 400 at the wheel reliably.

I was just surprised since 91 is a full dollar less at $3.89.

As far as the Busa I never had one and always wanted one, guilty pleasure. Fastest bike I ever had was an old R1 at 150hp. Can't imagine how the new literbikes are at 200+ but a Busa or ZR14 I think would be a nice cruise missile.

If I did not replace the turbo unit but did all else mods available that make sense with a custom tune .. goal was to make 350 HP .. Do you think that's possible... Would get a Dyno of course... Custom tune vs. aftermarket Livernois ?

Absolutely.

I firmly believe that 350 at the wheel is not only do-able with a full bolt on stock turbo'd e85 Ranger, but it should be fairly reliable.

User here @yamahaSHO is a tuner local to the metro area who's been around the turbo Ford scene a bit. I don't believe he has tuned his Ranger, but he should be able to provide more detailed info about what it'll take to get you there and who could tune it for you.

At a minimum you're looking at intake, intercooler, charge piping, downpipe and full exhaust, fuel pump, injectors, and a lot of dyno time. Dust off that HELOC it's gonna get some excercise.
