I'm surprised that there are so few commercial solutions to this very common problem. Lawsuits and vocal disgruntled customers would probably make it not practical. It seems like some lightweight honeycomb, kevlar panels would stop 90% of the damage. But, of course, it would be pretty hard to protect against that big killer softball-sized stuff.
