Another thought on the subject. I remember reading that premium was good for 25 HP in the Ecoboost. Not sure it it was when I had my Mustang or the Ranger.
Edit: Just found this.
Go to Ford's website right now and check out the Mustang EcoBoost Fastback, and the site will tell you that the 'Stang delivers 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Then click on the little citations next to those numbers, and you'll get a message that reads, "Horsepower and torque ratings based on premium fuel per SAE J1349® standard." After that, go to the owner's manual to find assurance that your Mustang EcoBoost's engine was designed to run on 87. At a glance, it feels like EcoBoost owners are being pulled in two directions, and forums are full of confusion on the matter.

I live in CO and anything over 91 is VERY hard to find. I run 91 and my last trip to So Dakota I averaged 24.1 MPG over the 750 mile round trip. At 75-80 MPH going through WY. I have used lower octane but I did lose MPG when I did. Usually about 2 MPG.

Lived in Colo. for 15 years and only ever bought regular (85 octane gas), including in high performance sport bikes.

Never heard a knock, never had an engine issue over several hundred thousand miles on two and four wheels.

And the number is the minimum. I'm curious what is the actual octane typically?

I don't know if anyone else has seen this one, but I just did and I actually liked it. This guy usually does some pretty good videos when it comes to explaining different things on automotive and other similar stuff. Also helps my argument of not running octane below 87.

I use premium / 91 Octane fuel in AZ. We get the low octane "premium" fuel they make in CA. In TX, I got premium fuel - 93 Octane. My motor made discernably more power with 93 Octane fuel.

What's strange is everything I've heard (and read) says the Phoenix area gets its fuel from CA while the Tucson area gets it from TX. If true (which I'm almost positive it is) I'm not able to find anything over 91 down this way.

The Phoenix area (and NV) will be seeing a huge spike in prices soon with the 2 refineries in CA shutting down. One at the end of this month from Phillips 66 and then Valero closing next Spring. Arizona gets 33% of its gas from California and Nevada gets 88% while Reno gets 100%.

But some relief coming in 3-4 years. o_O

It's behind a paywall but here's the jist of it.

Phillips 66 and Kinder Morgan plan to build and operate a new 20-inch, 1,300-mile pipeline connecting Texas and Arizona, a move that is likely to shift the balance of the local gasoline supply.

The Western Gateway Pipeline would transport gasoline and other refined petroleum products from Borger — a small city in the Texas Panhandle — to Phoenix. Officials with Phillips 66 and Kinder Morgan said in a statement that the proposed pipeline would ultimately create a pathway connecting refineries in Texas and the Midwest to a number of western states, including Arizona and California.

The new pipeline is expected to complete construction by 2029.

Most of the time you'll find many places to have 87 as the minimum. If you look in the owner's manual most of the time it'll State no lower than 87 or engine damage May occur.
