I went ahead and made the jump to try out the Foster SCMods sound enhancer on the ranger. These are meant for Supercharged vehicles to enhance the rotor whine in cabin. Well I wanted more turbo sound in the cab, which I definitely got! Quick snip of a video on it. Can get more videos if wanted, or pictures of install. Still have the Apollo GT axle back and have factory BOV VTA. Because of that this install was silly easy! I’m a bit of a nerd/ geek for turbo whistle...so I had to.

To me, it just sounds like a lot of air....maybe the mic couldn't pick the whistle of the turbo. Does it sound anything like an F-250 6.0L ?? I watched the video on the Foster SCMod website with the Mustang--that sounded like my stock '04 Lightning...I miss that truck.

It’s different than the 6.0. That was more exhaust note due to the variable turbo. This is more compressor sound. It was hard to pick up the whistle on the phone. I quieted it down a little from the first run and it’s less air wooshing and more spooling sound. I came from a 6.7 powerstroke with a Borg 366SXE that would sing beautiful compressor notes all day...and I missed it. I’ll see if I have a video of it.

Here is my old powerstroke with the Borg 366SXE. Loved the sounds that thing made.

I prefer the fluttering sound but apparently it is not good on turbo blades and bearings.

I've been considering this for my '08 supercharged Foose F-150. Sounds awesome but I think the novelty of it would wear out fast. It's also kind of expensive for basically a kazoo tapped into your intake tube. If I end up getting one, I'm going to plumb it into the airbox instead.

For the Ranger, a vent to atmosphere BOV is a better way to go.

When I want turbo noises, I just drive this.

My 91 Toyota Soarer I imported from Japan. Makes 600 wheel on kill with a 6262

Turbos suck air and muffle the exhaust note.

Superchargers suck air too, but use gears to turn the vanes.... hence the gears whine at high RPMs and over power the suction sound.

From a sound perspective, the upside of turbos is a much quieter exhaust note. The turbo muffles the exhaust a great deal. A supercharger doesn't muffle anything, and if not done proper, the exhaust will drone at cruise speed - LOUDLY.

I've been stopped by local police a time or two just for moderately accelerating to the speed limit. Police instinctively converge on that whine!

A friend following me hates the loud exhaust note.... and I had mufflers on the car! People in front tell of me tell me the car sounds like a vacuum cleaner on steroids!

No "turbo lag" with a supercharger, and torque curve is generally much flatter, but a turbo will make significantly more boost and power than a supercharger. I lose 25hp to parasitic loss turning that Supercharge with a belt off the crank.

Turbo power also comes on strong after the lag causing instability when running on a tight autocross circuit.

Both have their places. I've pulled my supercharger and will have the turbo system on the bench ready to install... probably over this winter.
