Ford Performance Tuner

Have any of you guys used the Ford Tuner? If so , what’s your thoughts? Guys are getting 50+ HP increase and 360 ft lbs of torque. Can go higher, they just don’t want to grenade the bottom end of the motor. This is just the tuner on a stock motor.

Unless you put in on a dyno, you are not going to know what you are getting in HP or torque boost. Alot of the talk of results with a tuner can be chalked up to confirmation bias.

Super happy with the tune. It's like a different truck. So happy with it I'm buying a CVF downpipe and intercooler and a Roush Air Intake. Supposedly according to tuningpro.co that should bring the hp up to 350 and 400fpt. Total cost will be around $2800 with installation.

I LOVE to make power with my Ranger.....but beware of the bottom end on these 2.3L engines when you get the HP up too high....which is variable. Bottom line is you don't want to be the next thread starter for the "I Threw A Rod" post. If I were you I would search through some of these kind of threads in here and see what kind of setup may have caused issues. This may sound kind of crazy but I think if I wanted to make 350 HP in my Ranger I would change the fuel pump and run E85. Several folks in here have posted Dyno runs with above 350 HP with stock motors....no tune. That maybe safer......IMHO.

BTW.....I've got about 67K miles worth of experience with a tuned Ranger making power......

Thanks, for the advice. I'll admit, I'm not an engine performance guy. I was just going by the mod suggestions on Tuningpro.co They suggest that if you get a Performance Tune like the dealer did for me that the other three mods would take stress off the performance tune or at least that's the way I read it. I am definitely not looking to get more aggressive on the tune. Wonder if you would mind looking at the article I was reading and what your thoughts are on what they say.

I heard the conditions to get the computer to adjust are rather specific, so normal driving likely alone likely wouldn't see it. But yeah I'm not expecting anything, figure it would be a mildly amusing experiment (I've been kinda bored lately).

Biggest and common mistake is people think the changes happen automatically when they fill it up with 91 or 93. Takes about two tank fills before the computer completely adjusts and you see results.

Has anyone used the SCT X4 tuner?

I used one loaded with 5star tunes with my 2013 f150, and loved it. There weren’t as many options as there are now. The thing I liked about it was that it could be married and unmarried to different vins 5 times before you had to have it unlocked again. One at a time of couse. Now it seems most are one and done. After that you pay an unlock fee to move it to another vehicle even if it has been unmarried. At least that’s how I understand it.

I’ve had the FP tune since 100 miles on my 2020 XL. Almost to 19k and no issues. Have put 93 only in it since new too, gotta pay to play. Well worth it.

If you're looking to get real increases from a downpipe you'll want the tune to account for it. The FP tuner does not have that capability.

A downpipe without a tune is really a waste of money. And it CAN be dangerous.

You cannot run e85 safely on a Ranger without a tune. At an absolute minimum you need a new HPFP AND a tune.

There is not one 5g Ranger on the planet making 350 hp at the crank OR the wheels on the stock motor and stock tune. I don't care if they're running on ammonium perchlorate.

No complaints about the Ford Performance Tune going on two years. I use 92/93 octane and have had no problems. I agree with the "pay to play" ideas as I like to go fast.

Not as easy to get a tune for a downpipe these days either with the EPA crackdown... I see plenty of people putting defoulers on their downpipe to avoid a code, but as you said it can be dangerous for the engine to not be properly tuned for it.

I got the Ford tuner to try and help the dumb ass shifting strategy, it did help, not enough though, I may actually spend the money for a tune that shifts better, the trans shifting is my biggest complaint with this truck.

As for the power, yeah it was better, it's a conservative tune, any other tune will likely make more power.

The guy at Ford Racing even stated "we have not seen any failures with that tune, it's a conservative tune"

I bought the tune thinking that the warranty coverage would be the same, it's not, he also stated "it's a aftermarket product, if it causes a failure, Ford can deny the claim" so really all you get with the Ford tuner is 36/36 coverage, after that you may as well have anybody's tune because Ford treats their tune the same as everybody's else's, subject to denial of a powertrain claim.
