External keypad.

My XLT didn't come with it. I bought it extra $109. Come to find out, no drilling, no wires, nothing. Just stick it on your door and your good to go for about 5 years.
BUT! It will not work without hooking it up to the computer and entering all 35 digits on the key card!
After showing Ford a youtube video of a mechanic doing it, they hummed and hahhed for an hour then finally followed the youtube instructions.? And they refunded me the price of the unit cuz the shop has to get involved. It's no good to you out of the box.
Works great. Safest place for my keys have always been "locked" inside my truck.

With Forscan, the code and some time you should be able to get it paired with your truck. Another member of the forums mounted his inside the gas tank cover. It is really a pretty nice spot to put it. I’ve also replaced the battery in my daughters unit in her Escape. Dental floss removal for the double sided tape. Carefully open it up and replace the battery and it’s good to go for another 5 years. Just replace the double sided tape with the good stuff and off you go.

Why would I want to spend money in Forscan? I got the dealer to do it for free and refund me the price of the unit.

I agree, and I've done this for years with my Escape.

I was going to get one for my Lariat ranger, but I've realized it would be useless for my intentions since the truck will unlock if someone grabs the door handle if the keys are inside! ?

I have mixed feelings about this realization.

This is not the case. If you lock it via the keypad, proximity lock/unlock is disabled.

Correct and they would either need to put the code in the entry pad or unlock with a 2nd key fob. Touching door without a fob would do nothing.

You could also use a Faraday Bag for the fob while it's inside the truck. This will block the RFID signal.

So there's no way to really self install these keypads? I want to get one - but I guess I'll wait until my next service appointment and just pay them for the install. I'm sure they'll still charge a full hour of labor even if it takes them 10 minutes.

You have to order them from the factory to get them to pre-program it. They stick it on the door but you can just use thin fishing line to remove it and stick in behind the fuel door or anywhere else.
