So what is up with the blanket over the battery.
These seem to be on a lot of cars and trucks.
Is it necessary? If so under what conditions?

It's to keep the battery feeling safe and secure. You don't want your battery with a feeling of insecurity under your hood.

OR

it protects it from under hood heat.

I'm still leaning towards the first one though. ?

I live on the mid Atlantic of US and get all 4 seasons. These battery blankets seem to have come about more recently. I don't remember these on batteries back in the day. But then again cars have become more electrically sophisticated. I'm thinking about an Optima Yellow Top and those don't have issues to -30 degrees and would be better suited for using an inverter for tools when needed. I don't think I've ever been in weather below -10
