Wow lots of lighting "experts" on this thread. Of course they get dimmer when its dark!
Like I said the problem is the gauges cluster and display need to be dimmer, but the rest of the indicators are too dim, IMHO.

Oh and like they say, why yes I am a rocket scientist. or in this case a lighting Engineer, spent 5 yrs messing with LED lighting systems ?

Maybe the bright dash is why there are so many complaints about headlights not being bright enough?
I dim mine down to one or two bars.

After my first long drive in the dark my wife thought there was a big problem the next day when she drove it.
I had gradually dimmed the dash display so low that in the light of day it was no longer visible.
I want to see that deer, cow, idiot on a bike...

Exactly.

On long road trips at night I used to turn all the interior lights completely off. Which I don't think is even possible on modern vehicles.

No, because you still need to read your speedometer. You can get the lighting real dim, but there still has to be something.

Why would I need to see my speedometer if I'm using cruise control accross Kansas on I-70 at night?

It was a nice feature to have.

As my eyes adjusted I kept dimming. Could still see them fine in the dark.

Driving at night, I dim mine down from max bright to 2-3 bars as evening becomes night. I keep the 8" screen set to Always Night, because for me, that daytime white screen is a distracting cyclops. I use the charcoal grey background wallpaper for Apple Car Play.

Our eyes adjust the pupils for the most light entering them. This helps near focus, but makes objects farther out and/or in darker areas of the field of view less noticeable. Think of how objects out in the yard are harder to see from inside the house than standing out in the same darkness.
With the dash lights on brightly, your eyes adjust accordingly, narrowing the pupils to let in less light. Also, peripheral vision is enhanced; better chance of seeing the deer on the side of the road.

Not everyone has cruise contol. You understand the concept of safety regulations?

I gotcha. I was just saying that in my opinion, the darker the better at night.

Yes, safety regulations are an attempt to keep stupid people from doing stupid stuff which unduly burden the masses for the ineptitude of the few.

Science says that the dimmer the interior lights, the better your vision OUTSIDE of the vehicle.

You can find that under your high-school physics file, Frank.
