Learned this just out of high-school working @ Radio Shack. They didn't care if all you sold all day was a $5 phone, as long as you sold the extended warranty on it. Because it was considered 100% profit.

Radio shack?
Yes.

Extended warranties, insurance, road hazard certificates, at best they're just gambling, at worst they're all a scam.

Take the OP for example. Been buying this "protection" for 17 years. Used it once, and is happy to not have to buy a tire, with no thought into how much it's cost him over the years.

It's insurance for those who can't afford to buy a new tire anytime. Over time it's not the best financial move but either is running premium fuel when 87 will do.

Am I missing something? Are you saying I can buy road hazard from them with having purchased tires from them?

probably. You can buy extended warranties from others places, not just the dealer

Whoa there. No where did I say I purchased a warranty for 17 years and used it only once.

What I said was that I drove 17 years with out getting a flat. And I got a tire warranty two weeks after getting my new truck. So I only had a warranty for 6 weeks, paid $75 (for all four tires) and replaced a $200 tire. Actually I paid $25 for a $200 if you look at it another way.

So how you get that I don’t think about a cost to me over the years I just don’t know how you arrived at that nonsense.

Get the coverage, don’t get the coverage makes no difference to me. I just hope nobody gets a flat. I put info out there for others to consider.

For the most part....As long as the tires are near new condition. Determined by the thread depth as measured with a depth gage they will sell you a tire warranty. Doesn’t matter where the tires are from as long as it’s a tire in their system.

And don’t pay full price, ask for some kjj in d of discount. They are flexible about it most times.

The last truck I had was a 1995 F150. A few years ago I put on a new set of tires and bought the road hazard warranty. I took advantage of the warranty on two occasions due to side wall punctures. We have bad roads and a lot of construction here in Louisiana.
I'd get it for my new truck, but I will be replacing tires in the near future and will get it with the new set.

Your post read as though you've had "protection" for 17 years as well, to me anyways. Apparently I missread.

Regardless, first flat in 17 years, how many sets of tires have you had in that time? For me it would be 8 or 9. $75 per set would be $600, which would mean you'd need to use it 3 times in 17 years to even break even. Sounds like another guaranteed house win to me.

I bought them for my BFG A/2 KO's. Worth it in the long run for expensive tires. Working as a construction fleet mechanic, I see a lot of unrepaiable sidewall punctures, blowouts, and slipped belts. I think $20-35 per tire with worth the peace of mind, rather than having to buy another $250+ tire. Discount Tire has always taken good care of me. With LT Dually 17's, 19.5's, and 22.5' all day..... last thing I want to do is work on another set of tires.

Hi Smell,

Back story....I managed Ford's offroad Racing, and flats are part of this game. One of my house teams, FMI with Greg Foutz building and driving our house team 8100 was plagued with stick flats. I knew Greg was a good driver, and I knew that BFG had two constructions of tires for any tire size for the desert racing. I found out Greg was not getting the Kevlar construction. I hit the roof and read Frank D. of BFG the riot act. Next race and for the rest of the season...Greg Foutz had few if any flats. Since this is way back when, I hope BFG sells the good stuff to all customers. Sure, Price for it, but make it available to all. End of the year, I had a come to Jesus meeting with BFG about our factory support. I was told they would not have a two tier process in the future....and it appears they held true to the promise. I was Totally pissed at BFG at the time and told them they would never be a supplier to Ranger with this bullsh*t practice of two tier.

Best,

After plenty of issues in the past with Big-O tires I won't shop there.

Now I won't argue that having road hazard warranty is a good idea especially when going offroad. I got it when I purchased my Firestone Destination XT's the other week.
What size XTs did you get ? Just looking at the ads they say not guaranteed to fit the Ranger

I went with 285/70-17 on factory sport wheels and no spacers. Also had the old man emu lift. Only had rub at full lock and it did not bother me.
