This spring I bought a ā€˜21 Lariat FX4. Most of my used car search was for an XLT with options I cared about like the locking rear diff, electric seats, spray in liner, and front parking sensors, which was not a super easy combo to find. I was hours away from pulling the trigger on one when a new listing for a Lariat with all those same things popped up, similar price but more miles. I’m happier I ended up with the Lariat because I really wasn’t excited about going back to halogen headlights from HID/LED, and I’m glad I have the FX4/TrailControl so I can’t second guess whether I would have wanted them. Also the B&O sound system with sub is a delighter after how bad the radio was in my Subaru before.

Somewhere here there is a thread or document with a table of deleted features by year. I studied it and felt the ā€˜21 was a sweet spot in that I still had some warranty left but didn’t lose anything I cared too much about.

Newb here. Researched all of the midsize trucks and decided on Ranger. Now I am searching to make a purchase and I am not sure which year and trim level. This will be my everyday driver and I plan on using it for traveling with a small travel trailer. I also live in New England and winters can get rough. We may do some very light off roading. Right now, I am leaning toward an XLT FX4. My budget is $40k or less. I am confused on which year would be the best. 2019 was the first come back year so that may have had more issues according to car complaints. Thoughts on best year, trim level and packages?
I have the 21 FX4. Love it. But you will want to change the shocks out eventually.

I currently have 54,000 trouble free miles.

There is a theory in a couple of the threads on here that 2019 rangers are a little more prone to transmission and blend door issues. Have no idea if its true but those two issues are the reason I went with an extended warranty.
I must have missed those

Hi Chris,

Since this can be a contentious question, I will offer up my thouhts. The 2019 USA Ranger had a beginning in 2016 in the ROW...Rest Of the World. So 2019 was pretty much proven before its intro into North America. I have a 2019 and it is trouble free. It is a 4x4 FX4 as I am the "father" of the FX4 brand...(search these Forums for how that came about..). Anyway, I think you will find your critera should focus on things that are important to you, and not so much model year, but there was some decontenting on 2020 on up which might tip you focusing on earlier models, etc.

Best,
Phil

20 or 21 would be my pick as well. Lean more to 21 if you are looking for one with the black appearance package or the best color, Cyber Orange Metallic (well, IMO).

It comes with Bilstein 5100s all around, Ford Performance grille with lights, engine cover, tonneau, and some other goodies. Hint it’s the one I traded in for my Silverado. Great truck, still needs a good home :like:
That is just up the road from me. But, but really, no tow package. :(

Did anyone try out the Frontier or Colorado before deciding on the Ranger? Is it worth waiting for the 2024 Ranger? I see the big screen but any other significant changes other than that and styling?

Whatever you decide, you might want to think about a purchase in the very near future while prices are reasonable.
If the UAW goes on strike tonight, I have a feeling that it will lase awhile, and prices of new and used vehicles will go up as inventories go down, similar to what happened just a few years ago with the pandemic and chip shortage.

I don't mean to question your authority on these matters, but it is my understanding the 2.3 ecoboost w/ 10r80 was not offered until 2019. So the powertrain combo was not proven in the rest of the world on the Ranger platform.

Hi,

You are technically correct on powertrain package, but the powertrain was previously tested on other vehicles before the Ranger.... Yes there are some package "issues" like the clunky access to the oil filter and the "dreaded" two piece driveshaft start up shudder.

Thanks for bring this up for clarification!

Best,
Phil

@shane1 Hi brother…would love to help you out. I’m versed in the 2019 Ranger Lariat, 4 years of ownership and a recent 2023 Ranger purchase. Short version is the much hyped ā€œRanger content deleted listā€ isn’t an issue in the day to day of things. I went from a base Lariat to an XLT with FX4, TECH PKG, Black package with heated seats and I can say I only miss the LED’s for looks on the Lariat. The FX4 Off Road Crew lends a nicer ride compared to the 4x4 SuperCab I had. Also the 10Speed transmission issues were allegedly fixed for the 2023 year. I can vouch it is WAY smoother than my 2019, the 2023 rides like a much more refined truck. The ride reminds me of the 2018 Tacoma Off-Road four door 6ft bed I owned which was smooth compared to the Tacoma Sport model. I’ve driven the Colorado, and it was solid yet unimpressive, 2023 model should be nicer..and have not driven the new Frontier. Keep in mind the new Ranger & Tacoma 2024 will be at full MRSP for awhile and will be first year runs.

I have a lot more I could add if you want the help.

I suggest this Ranger and working them down on price, would be a great deal and only has 50miles on it.
