As one that has not quite yet fallen under the spell of @AzScorpion and his Damper Mind Tricks, I have to ask if there's a noticeable difference in the force needed to CLOSE the tailgate (asking for my wife, of course...).

No.

The damper is valved so that it only damps in the opening direction.

Any additional force to close the tailgate is nigh unnoticeable.

No noticeable difference but others that have damper phobia might tell you differently.

You'll ( I mean your wife ) have no trouble raising it back up.
