Are they water stained?

It's probably due to a poorly applied seal on the third brake light housing. My truck recently started to leak, and I tore it apart yesterday.

The seal is a foam/rubber type deal. In my case it wasn't put on completely "square" and was allowing a leak along a short section..

Just enough dust had been brought in to make it relatively obvious where it was leaking

Mine started leaking, just as ford would want, at 37k miles.

I just gobbed a bit of ^ this stuff all around the mating surface of the seal and put it back on. I'm sure it's days of leaking are now done.. but I'll report my level of success when it's done raining in like.. 3 days lol.

The "proper" fix would probably be the installation of a new housing with a correctly applied seal.. I just wanted the leak gone asap.

Holy crap I just noticed this kind of stain on my headliner as well. I looked over the roof rails and rear window. I can’t really look over my third brake light since my. Roof top tent is nearly up against it. Looks like I have something to do now.

Only a year old with 8k miles, but I've been checking once in a while; usually after washing it.

its a problem for any make and model to be honest.
I had an older F150 that did it.
Found out during a car wash when water was literally running in.
Its now something I check and monitor on anything I own.

No stains on the inside , but it doesn't seem to fit tight , looks like a lot of gap to me , I may take it off and check gasket ...

Hmmmm. When I had the electric brake controller installed about 18 months ago (Hitch World in St. Pete FL), the installer had to take all the weather stripping off the doors on the driver's side, pull back the headliner and run the wire to the high brake light. I just checked and there are no water stains inside, but I did notice a place on the right rear of the roof where the black paint (or whatever)line runs fore and aft has come off and is starting to corrode. Is that a common problem as well?

There has been some issues on the roof trim piece if that is what you are talking about.
