My dash gauge never fluctuates, it feels like as soon as the coolant is 100F or greater it swings to the center, and anywhere between say 100F to 230F it’s in the same spot. Can anyone confirm this or is my gauge broken?

Here’s what it looks like when it’s only been driven for 5 miles or 50 up a hill with a trailer. Zero difference

I run a Scangauge ii and monitor engine and trans temps, when the truck was pretty new I decided to pass some big rigs going up hill while towing, the power was great but I first realized the cooling system could use some work. I hit I think 240F and was shocked to see the needle moved barely past middle. Made me wonder what the heck is the 3/4 travel temp on the gauge.

I was only at that temp a few seconds really because the trans was slow to shift, was holding RPM unnecessarily and cooled fast after but was a surprise.

Going up to Brian Head, UT Towing I took the hard route and this short steep climb peaked trans temps somewhere in the 250F range and no light, I assume +260F is the trans overheating warning.

I have been wanting to upgrade the radiator since it seems the trans uses it partially for cooling too. I just have little faith in dealing with the dealership and them blaming it for an engine or trans issue. A member here works at the dealer I go to and recently said it shouldn't be an issue. I may do it for next summer.

48k miles and so far all good. At least it seems the failure is progressive and wont leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Finally did some digging and found that my blend date is 7/22/22 but build date is sometime in August 2022. The window sticker unfortunately was not kept in a safe place and adhesives from other truck PDI items ruined the sheet, so all I can confirm is August something 2022 was the final build date.

With regards to the transmission repair, I've had it in a few times for this work, but didn't get a detailed printout every time. Attached is my initial diagnosis (with MPH deleted, nobody needs to know how fast I go on a 2-lane road) and it was back one more time for the transmission overhaul. IIRC they replaced gaskets, bolts, retainers, and seals but I don't know if the CDF was replaced during that time. I'll check with the dealership when they are open to see what I can find.

Is there something that can be done to prolong the life of the CDF drum moving forward? Can't seem to find a transmission temp gauge on the dash, and only knew it was overheating when it shifted hard and threw fluid out the vent at the top of the unit. That and not being able to find the right gear were the dead giveaways.

Guess I'll have to wait for my truck to be serviced, the dealers are all backed up and loaners are rare so it's a waiting game for now.

The lastest TSB is 24-2101 that mine was fixed under. I t did list a CDF drum in the parts list.

For those on the fence, this is probably a good reason to get Ford Protect before the powertrain warranty is up. For the price of the plan, even a single 10R80 failure (or 2.3 EcoBoost head or cooling system issue) would be a wash with the price of the warranty.

I plan on driving mine to 200k+, and the ESP warranty covers 140k miles above the 3/36, so for me, it was worth it.

Cannot guarantee the 140k miles past the 3/36 will be perfect, but at least I won’t be on the hook for a $5k or $10k repair.

Y'know, it's funny how the EPA snaps their fingers and US carmakers jump to it, but there is no consumer agency to snap their fingers when those carmakers continue to make and sell crap equipment. Guess the optics just aren't there.

It'll never happen. All the auto manufacturers have deep pockets. ??

If it makes it past the warranty, that's all that matters to them.

I guess but 100,000 miles is a long way. Some (as we've seen here) are having transmission failures at under 5,000 miles. I know that's not the normal but with only 18,000 members who knows how many others out there are failing too?

Oddly enough the Ford Protect rates skyrocket if you choose any option with 150k miles or above, so even if the unit was bulletproof, reading between the lines 150–175k is when something major fails, otherwise the price wouldn’t be like $1,000 more when you go above the 150k mile option.

My drum went at 57k. And came back still feeling odd. The controller is now being replaced in the tranny.

I had the CDF replaced with the updated drum. It stopped the really hard shifting where it loses power and slams into gear but it still shifts hard from 4-5-6 gear.

I had water leaking into the cab that cause mold issues. The rear vents were leaking and replaced.

The AC blower was shaking at the highest setting and was replaced.

The truck had a recall for the sealant on the front windshield and it was fixed.

The truck shudders when coming to an abrupt stop but the dealership couldn’t replicate that.

The truck bucks when driving 25-35 and the dealership couldn’t replicate that.

When the trucks in 7-8-9 gear, it jerks when I let off the petal or engage the petal. Dealership couldn’t replicate that.

I’m trying to be loyal to Ford but all this trouble with only 30k miles on the truck has me looking for a replacement.

Wow, you've certainly have had your share of problems. It's troubling to see these posts with so many issues and while this forum only represents a small portion of Ranger owners, I'm sure there are many more out there having the same ones.

I've owned over a dozen Ford trucks and vans and honestly if I had half of those issues I would've dumped it by now. Luckily both my Rangers have (so far) been trouble free but anything mass produced is going to have some issues. It's how the manufacturer handles it, that is the key. I'm done being loyal or a fan boy to any brands now. If they can't make a good product I'll move on to something else. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
