Love this truck & plan on having it for many years. Regarding the CDF drum issue, I watched vids on what happens & how the revised drum looks. I have ford ext warranty but as a laymen, I have some questions. Do driving habits accentuate this? Will this be an issue on all 10R80 over time or could some go 150k or more and may never see the issue? Any low mileage ones that have the issue? I know it’s used in other vehicles so I’m sure the data is out there. Most vids I found just go over the issue and replacement.

https://www.facebook.com/FordTechMakuloco This is his thoughts on it ,,," I swear just about every 2017-2020 10R80 could use a new valve body by now. They fail in so many different ways, causing a variety of shifting and torque converter clutch issues. If you are having any issues with your Ford 10R80 transmission, it is either a programming issue, valve body issue or CDF drum issue. All are common on this transmission, so go from least intrusive to most intrusive when diagnosing…

Well maybe no one knows yet….
Or maybe most are waiting to see if you read all the other threads in this forum about the transmission issues/fixes/mileage disparities.

There's a LOT written in here about it. Using the google-search feature here is sure to bring you hours of reading fun. HOURS of it. Or maybe even days, friend. There's a lot of coverage here. Your answer lies within...

I have read them friend. I had some specific questions to see if anyone worth more knowledge or mechanic background knows some causes. I have not seen any answers to my questions in the ones that I have read .

I have to believe this is a situation where allowable tolerances come into play. Not every CDF drum is failing so I’m figuring that the bushing is tighter in some than in others. I have seen tuning remove or lessen the delay in shifting which might prevent further damage or failure but I can’t say for certain. My transmission was problematic since new, it was underfilled, had intermittent reverse issues and occasional flaring into fifth gear. That progressed into a full loss of second gear when cold and fifth when hot, only under light throttle, if I stepped into it everything was fine. I purchased and replaced my transmission at 34k because of this and it’s completely different now. I realize now that the truck came with a bad unit and it got worse and worse until it died.
I replaced the fluid and filter first, that fixed reverse.
I replaced the valve body and reprogrammed the ecu when second and fifth started failing and there was absolutely no change.
I replaced the transmission and all is well, it shifts great and holds the extra power perfectly. Only time will tell if it develops another CDF drum issue though.
