So I go in the garage last nite and I see my dad mostly under the Ranger and only legs sticking out , first thought , he's trying to get it to run ovet him , second thought (and this aint out of the question) he's pulling the damn transmission out of it already!.... But then I hear him talking to himself , and its all good stuff ! .... Like " damn , thats a pretty sweet way to do that " and "well that looks solid as an anvil" and he just went on and on (to himself , somehow im invisible most of the time) about how "utterly and compleatly impressed" he was ... "Very trucky under there".... And his most praise for the belly of the beast was the almost "artistic " placement of the spare tire and the way the tow hitch embraces it ... ( last truck was a GMC 1500 never was able to drop the spare down , horrible engineering...dad said) dad said look at a Colorado and see how Gawd awful low that spare is , can t even see it on a ranger... Any way , he is VERY happy after his undercarriage tour.... BUT ! I did hear him cuss a little at one point " DAMNIT ! FORD ! pleanty of freaking room under here to run a damn tranny dipstick tube to the top "!....oh well , he's getting there ....

I used to restore muscle cars as a side job a couple of decades ago, and I have done plenty of work on all of my vehicles over the years. I am also restoring a 68 Oldsmobile Cutlass right now, so I have been all over and under a lot of vehicles over the years.

When I crawled under my Tremor to remove the factory rails, my eyes must have looked like a kid in a candy store. I probably spent 10 minutes admiring the engineering of the Ranger, and I was also quite pleased at how clean it was even with 3000 miles on it. NOTHING is clean under my Cutlass. ?

You can tell that the Ranger is really well designed, but it also made me wonder why it doesn't have a larger gas tank. It appears to have the room!

When I took my Ranger to the local shop down the road where I work just to have rear shocks upgraded (Eibachs), the owner used to work at a Ford service department. Only took him a few minutes to actually change the shocks, while I waited.... but when he came out he said he would have been out sooner but he was really checking the truck over since it was the first new Ranger he had in to do anything on. He told me he was really impressed.

Dad doesn't really do doctors , closer to dealers... And yes , he was puffing away under there , but again , just VERY well done underneath, 1st truck I , Ehhhh , he ... 1st truck he ever bought without crawling underneath. (Thata where the goodstuff be).... Dad said he would suggest everybody drop their spare twice a year and really clean under there and lube things up ...old school...

It sounds like your dad, my dad (RIP), and my father-in-law would get along great! My father-in-law is a die hard Ford guy and ex-mechanic (worked on police cars for years). My dad was a true gearhead and a former drag racer (I built a Chevy 350 small block with him when I was 14).

So your dad just randomly crawls under vehicles or something?

If I saw my "dad" under mine I'd stomp on his nards, but that's a topic for another day,
Curious @ RedDakooter05… you and RP related? :inspect:

No just his own truck , and I can tell that some people here think that looking under ones truck is a compleatly insane thing to do , maybe it is these days , especially if some damn kids are going around nard stomping old men looking for their tranny dipsticks !

I think it's safe to say that this is the first time that sentence has ever been uttered. It's glorious

I will tell you a back story about frames... I was a vocal advocate of a Boxed frame...Bean counters shouted "too expensive" Package engineers shouted "We need the C section frame to protest the precious fuel and brake lines AND the wiring... I was frustrated because I wanted a less flexible frame... Then when I found that Ranger had the boxed frame I was a happy camper. Like your dad, I crawled under my Ranger the day I brought it home. Wife sighed and mumbled those famous words...."Damn Engineers". I too was impressed by what I saw and was very happy that the Ranger continues to strive for the heritage of being Ford Tough!'.

So we had a frame cracking issue on the heavy duty E350 prototypes. Ford requires...No Frame cracking, so the Powers that Be dictated a frame doubler, a stamped C section that fit inside the frame C section and was welded in place. By gosh that was going to fix the problem....Guess what...frame cracked at the end of the doubler rear wards. So the powers that be dictated the doubler be extended by 6 inches. Darn....frame now cracked behind the lengthened doubler...So the powers that be dictated another 6 inches. Same result. Then this engineer that had done some calculations said to increase the frame thickness by 0.010 inches....Powers that be said it will not fix it as WE powers that be cannot be wrong. But...we followed this lowly engineer's advice and...no cracking and the Powers that be said....Start Production! Sigh...

Best,
Phil

My dad is the same way. He's been a mechanic for close to 40 years. He's getting ready to shut down his shop and retire. The first time I took my truck to visit him, he's like "lets put it on the lift and take a look at this sucker." Well he does his thing, pulls out his 10 year old flash light and starts inspecting things. His words were "this thing is built damn good. I'm impressed." He's never had a newer gen Ranger in his shop before, so mine was the first one he inspected. Off topic, he was a die hard Toyota fan, and always recommend Tacomas until the new gens came out and he has them in his shop every other week for something breaking. Needless to say, he doesn't recommend the new Tacoma's to anyone anymore. According to him though, the Chevy trucks are the biggest POS. He's had so many in his shop, even ones that are 4-5 years old for major failures.
