I thought it was 10 and 2? Have I been driving around unsafe for the last 40 years?
If you take a performance driving class, it's 4 and 8 now. Don't worry though, it'll change to left hand 3 and right hand 10 before you know it.

I understand where you are coming from but believe it or not, some of us would like to utilize paddles in our Rangers. Live dangerous my friend ✌?
I was one of those people too when I first bought my truck, was wondering if the mustang wheel could be utilized.. but then I remembered that our trannys aren't DSG and take a week to shift manually and just kinda forgot about it. If the damn slushbox would shift fast enough to make paddles fun I'd be all over it... sadly they don't... and I'd just be disappointed lol.

When I started driving I remember they told us 3 and 9 because you can Do a full rotation as compared to 2 and 10 it can't quite get there. I remember having to explain it to my family when they would always tell me 10 and 2.

If you use the up and down shifters on the stick, you’ll find they don’t respond immediately…they sorta shift when they want…how will a paddle shifter help ?
This won't change that... as its most likely using the OEM TCM module to tell the computer to change gears. This is strictly a conveyance thing

Paddles on the wheel or rocker switch on the shifter handle, I am a bit confused what is the difference? Seems like a lot of work for what some may concider adding COOL FACTOR.........but functionally doesn't do a darn thing except lighten the wallet.

When I drove my 5-speed manual Ranger, I thought the paddle shifters in my Passat would be a lot of fun - it has tiptronic trans and paddles - turns out I hardly used them. Now that I drive my new Ranger, I NEVER use them when I DRIVE my sedan.

I had paddle shifters in a Smart and it’s shift pattern was so bad, paddles were the best way to go. Fun, but it was a 3-cyl diesel Smart.

It could only do 0 to 60 in a tail wind.

Hi Christopher,

Yep....10 and 2 is not as good as 9 and 3.....It should have always been 9 and 3.......as the greatest leverage on a wheel is 90° hand placement....

best,
Phil

Isn't 9 and 3 because steering wheels have airbags? Your hands go out instead of towards you head like they would at 10 and 2.
Plus 10 and 2 made it easier to hand over hand the full size steering wheels in vehicles without power steering. Few do that in a modern car.

And on topic, drove a car with paddle shifters, novelty wore off quickly. Rather be rowing gears in a manual.

Hi KJ,

That is an old wives tail.. way prior to air bags.... I recall it was the misguided Fed Gov't commercial on safe driving....

best,

Honestly could be, but they really focused on the full rotation of 9 and 3 vs 2 and 10 Two retired cops did the teaching. I remember they were talking about road rage, that was the first and last time I've ever heard "they will do battle in the street" LOL.

No. 9/3 allows you to make 180 degrees of steering input without removing your hands from the wheel. This will get you through most emergency situations. You have an obstacle in front of you, car, child, cow, whatever. You are then able, if needed, to input 180 degrees of steering input say to the left. Then you will need to counter steer. You can then, again if needed, input up to 360 degrees of steering input before making your final input to get you back to center.

8/4 works great for extended high speed driving using "shuffle"steer. There is a shift to more of the shuffle steer for all driving because you keep your hands at 8/4 all the time to avoid the airbag. It makes for interesting slalom for sure.

Everyone talking about the lil +/- to up/dwn shift are insane! That thing is so ergonomically terrible id likely form carpal tunnel.

Id rather have a paddle shifter instead if just driving on D/S because the system sucks picking a gear -imo. I havent driven many automatics in a truck, but in a car its much smoother. This is also exaggerated for myself because ive only ever owned manual vehicular all my life. And in the end i can shift better any automatic system period.
