Ford’s Oakville Assembly Plant used to build the Edge and Nautilus until that work was moved to China. The original plan was to re-tool it to produce “EVs for everyone”, but we know how that played out. The plan now is to build Super Duty F250, 350, and 450 trucks. That requires an additional re-tooling and to help Ford do that while keeping good paying jobs in this very important plant, the Canadian government has stepped up.

Details are in this Globe and Mail story….

It’s a massive facility that employs a ton of people. It would be a shame to see it shuttered.

Is that where they will build the new Carhartt Super Duty truck?

I’m not sure. Worldwide production for Nautilus and Edge were at Oakville so maybe all SD trucks will be made there. I guess it comes down to capacity.

You can see one of their lots as you come down the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) into Oakville.

It’s going to be quite a sight to see all those trucks parked there.

I like the idea of that Carhartt Edition trim package. Ford seems to at least have some luck with that kind of branding.

Althiugh, I’m not so sure about the “manhole cover” inspired wheels. I don’t mind the look of the wheels but I wish they hadn’t mentioned where the design idea came from.

Now, this is all I see…

So which is it, $464 million or $350 million?

Ever since Carhartt stated making designer clothes and collaborating with high end fashionistas, I’ve lost respect for them… When I hear Carhartt now, this is what I think of 😂

Follow my link to the other article on the same subject, but updated.
Doh! Didn’t realize it was a link.

Yeah, that $464 million Canuckistan Pesos is about $350 million U.S. Greenbacks.

The current exchange rate is 1 USD = 1.3680 CAD as of May 8, 2026. Now I know why all the outlet malls aren't full of Canadian busses these days. They used to be backed up out on the highways when it was almost 1/1.
I thought Canada was pushing for all electric trucks by 2035 🤔.

I went back and read it but couldn’t find where they mentioned $350 million.
I read somewhere the $$ invested might be as high as $3 billion in the oakville plant, I also recall a brampton ont plant that made jeeps was idle and is slated to build chinese leapmotor EVs as part of the tariff agreement with China. Lots of stuff going on with autos, tariffs and global mfg. But good to hear the plants are providing employment for you poutine eating Canucks. Canada also supplies a good amount of steel to the US - I recall yrs back seeing those integrated steel making mills decorating the skyline in Hamilton, not many integrated mills operate in the US anymore.

the days of roughly 1:1 are gone. :( When I bought my place in PHX, the CDN dollar was higher. Haven’t seen that for a long time. Throughout the 60s, I think the CAD was always higher than the USD. My folks would drive down to Virginia and Florida to visit my cousins in the states and try to pass off Canadian Tire money (coupons) as Canadian dollars.

I’ll bet you real money any good Canadian barn find will have some of these in the glove box.

Our previous Prime Minister was VERY optimistic about EVs and set some aggressive targets. He had the backing of the smaller, far left party but we have a new Prime Minister (same party) and the recent reality and public appetite for that kind of approach has changed those plans.

I read somewhere the $$ invested might be as high as $3 billion in the oakville plant, I also recall a brampton ont plant that made jeeps was idle and is slated to build chinese leapmotor EVs as part of the tariff agreement with China. Yeah, I don’t know how high the total might be between tax incentives, forgivable loans, federal grants, matching funding by the province of Ontario, Ford’s own investment, etc. You can see how it climbs up there when you take it all into account.

For fifty or sixty years, we all had a pretty good thing going. The Big 3 wanted to sell cars to Canadians and we wanted their cars. We knew we could make our own cars but it was easier to make a deal to produce their cars here for our market as well as theirs. We had the raw materials, the workforce, close proximity to markets, etc. And so, the Auto Pact came to be. It was a great relationship for a long time. GM Canada even produced a number of cars exclusively for the Canadian market (Beaumont, Acadian, and others). Parts manufacturing, engine plants, and assembly…we did it all. I think folks might have heard of the Ford 351 Windsor. We’ve been joined at the hip for a while.

I think the original AMC plant in Brampton (I lived down the street from there as a kid) became the Jeep assembly plant, then it became idle. The Chineses certainly have that plant in their sights as well as any others that Ford, GM, Toyota, or Honda abandon.

The Hammer (Hamilton) is an old school steel town and there are fewer steel mills than there were back in the day, likely due to cheaper, overseas steel, but it still spews black smoke and sends steel to the U.S. and around the world.

I hear you about autos, tariffs, and global mfg. I guess things will always be changing, not always for the good.

Keep driving by in your SuperCab and see if you can convince them to make a few trucks that actually look good and have a proper bed length to door handle ratio with 6 and 2 being the sweet spot imo... NO FORD ! Not 6 door handles and a 2 foot bed as I damn well KNOW thats what you guys want and seem to be heading towards at EcoBoost speeds...
