Anyone else ever feel a sort bumping sensation like someone light ran into the rear bumper when you come to a complete stop from greater than 30 mph. Not sure if its a braking issue or something with the transmission and/or rear differential.

Yep, early on, but got a Ford Tune and it went away. My thought was its the downshifting of the tranny. Scary though aren't they? Wife and I thought we were rear ended a couple times.

Want some fun? Turn off your truck in Neutral, then start it back up in neutral, and then shift to Drive. It'll get you a really good clunk.

Ford Tranny is weird through probably the first 1500 miles while it learns how you drive. Just use Sport or Tow mode, they're more fun.

could be a little bit of slack or give in the drive line. i wouldnt worry about it unless it gets worse or happens every stop.

Check your tail shaft slip joint!
This has been an issue ever since the PX Ranger came out way back in 2011, the slip joint in the tail shaft probably has no grease in it. This causes the 'bump' when you come to a complete stop. Just grease the joint and it'll go away (or if you have the will power, force the dealer under warranty to grease the joint if you can get them to acknowledge the fault).

Tail Shaft Slip joint. I will have to find this as I have never heard of such. My truck has 7,000 miles on it and only noticed this sensation during the past 3 weeks. Also get a bump when starting from a stop which is probably the same thing. Anyone have any photos of the Tail Shaft Slip joint and what type of grease is best for this? Thanks

Dealer replaced my entire driveshaft assembly to remedy this issue. It helped quite a bit. Looks like the guys running custom single piece driveshafts have even better luck.

I am approaching 10K miles and had a similar problem early on. It drove me crazy.

I think it is a brain dead transmission that needs to learn. My symptoms were transmission hunting, and not downshifting until I was almost completely stopped. Right at the stopping point it would let loose, and you could feel yourself being pushed forward as the brakes grabbed. I did not like the feeling and my wife complained about it. It has over time dissipated until it finally disappeared. It now shifts smooth going up and down, no more hunting for gears anymore, shift points are right on target - going up and down. Just as important s that the truck now comes to a smooth stop.

I would drive it for a while and see if it begins to clear up. I can tell you that I am glad that I waited. I don't trust dealerships dinking around with my vehicles, even under warranty.

I have a couple of thoughts.

Why doesn't the dealer perfrom this initial learning on all new vehicles? Seems it would eliminate a great deal of problems and service calls.

My 2020 Ranger never clunked when starting or stopping. It exhibited poor shift points and when coming to a stop would hold onto the lowest gears much too long before finally releasing the gear which allowed the brakes to grab when the engine torque was released.... causing a very unpleasant lurch just as the truck came to a stop. Annoying as hell!

FWIW, my transmission shift points smoothed out over time. And I never attempted to "train it". I can not explain it. I simply know what is was doing, and what it is doing now 9800 miles later. Maybe the thing simply broke in. I have no clue. I am simply happy that it is functioning as well as my old 2005 Ranger.... which BTW suffered from the sloppy yoke spline in the trannie and grease cured it way back then. I just had the transmission rebuilt and the clunking was back, and I had to tell the mechanic to grease pack the shaft... cured it again.

I have not read the the entire encyclopedia that is the Ford Ranger Manual. Maybe I should have followed those precise instructions to cure my trucks misbehaving transmission. I simply never got to page 307 to read it (smile). In the past I used the auto owners manual as a reference guide. Seems you need a BS degree to operate a modern vehicle correctly.

I purchase new and hold my vehicles for very long times, 20 years or so. I rushed the last purchase on the 2020 Ranger as I didn't want to get a vehicle any more advanced then these models.

In fact I am a little concerned about these. So much so that I didn't sign up for Ford Pass. I do not want Ford or any other company or government monitoring my driving patterns. I also don't want them updating any SW without my prior permission.

No auto updates for me! Privacy = Freedom. Most people don't think about it, but they should.

I am a techie. I spent my early career in the USAF at NORAD CMC 2500' underground in the US war room and at USAF SAC HQ in their War room. Each required a Top Secret SBI Clearance. I then joined IBM and worked with the team that built the first IBM PCs. I managed AI HW and SW developments for many years. We knew in the mid 1980's where tech would be in the 2020's - we had a lot of it already in our research facilities. I ended my career working for Lenovo as the Mgr of I/T for the western hemisphere. Working for the communist Chinese was eye opening. When I resigned from Lenovo I discarded all cell phones as I knew they were being purposed as surveillance tools for the state. I have refused to own one until recently when Purism built the first Linux based secure phone in the country. It doesn't spy on you. I don't want any device, including my automobiles spying on me. I have witnessed societies that to do and it is not pleasant.

Forgive my long winded diatribe... it is the ramblings of an old man. I'll step off my soap box now, and go sit in my quiet corner.

Tony

PS: I am tempted to try the process, but I fear it may undo how well the trannie is operating now. If it ever acts up I now know to go to page 307!

Thanks, Tony

Brought the truck to the Ford dealer I bought if from to have them figure out the reason for the bump sensation. After 2.5 hours said they couldn't duplicate it and I called them out on it until the service manager rode with the mechanic and felt it every time they came to a stop and again when moving. Another 3 hours and all they could say was it might be the torque convertor or the transmission. Never said anything about the joints or the so called slip yoke. Now they want me to come back next week so they can check the transmission. And so it begins!!!

I do not believe it's the transmission. Shifts smoothly and the bump comes from the rear of the vehicle. Is there a viable solution to this problem? Should I just open the boot and grease the damn yoke?

Not a prof mechanic, but simply opening the boot and filing with grease would be an easy "try" for me before going back to "do we cheat em and how" dealership. If it still comes back, at least you can say you eliminated that option, and that a more in depth investigation needs to take place by them or, what I would do, try a different dealership. Hope it's just the grease ;)

PS: Love the graphics on that blue Tremor :like:

Why don’t you ask the dealer to grease the yoke? Others have been successful at getting it done under warranty.

Unfortunately, when I had the same complaint, and not knowing what it really was, I let the dealer blow it off. I plan on taking it back to them when it’s time for the next oil change and get them to address it. If they try to blow me off again, I might offer that if they do it and doesn’t fix it, I’ll pay, and if it does fix it it’s on them under the warranty. Though mine is barely there during the cooler weather and reappears when hot out.
