I was just out poking around in the engine bay and noticed this hose(?) coming from the fan that seems to have completely broken off what it was connected to. But I'm a little lost at what it is connected to. It seems like a metal plug. Any ideas? Is this a 'trip-to-the-dealer' type issue where the fan might fail or a simple hose replacement? Is it even important? Thanks all.

Yep - That’s a Anti—Rotation hose for the fan clutch , at this point it is fully unclear the cause of it breaking, you are lucky the fan clutch module did not spin and take out the wiring harness with it.
The most likely is just hose age and becomes brittle.
Get a piece of 3/8 fuel line (if I remember correctly) (size)
Get the fuel line rated for fuel injection, it is reinforced and a couple of hose clamps and just replace it.

Not my Ranger but Daughter's future husbands that I fixed.

I do not know how long the hose was broken, I just hit my spare hose box and fixed it.

I did confirm its 3/8 HP Fuel Injection Hose, its stiff to keep the contour.

gosh hoses already getting brittle in less than 5 years. :(
The OE hose is merely a cheap quality vacuum hose, my testing so far on this thing shows there should not be any real rotational torque on the hose.
As the Fan spins (Clockwise) the hose purpose is to keep the electric module (the part that the hose is connected to) in place and keep the wiring harness from moving and intact.

So somehow during driving the truck and over time, the small amount of rotational force that is on that hose (flex & release) breaks at that point where it connects to the engine bracket.

New that hose is pliable and soft, over time (heat) makes it brittle enough to just fall apart in your hand.

I believe this is an engineering oversight that was not tested for long term reliability.

The real question is, for those that have had the wire harness ripped out and an expensive repair.
It this hose the root problem or is the fan clutch seizing and causing the module to have more than normal rotational force applied to the hose.
As some only have the hose break and the module stays in place and some experience the broken hose and spun module with broken wire harness

I do not believe the hose is breaking and then getting caught up in the fan and ripping the wire harness.
Due to the spacing between the Fan and the Hose, if the hose comes in contact with the fan it would push it out of the way - not grab it

Nate, I saw your thread and the first that came to mind was that this issue has been discussed more than once recently and the answer will come very quickly.

Thank you all for the responses. I'll just replace the hose myself.

Duke, I apologize. Despite only being 25, I can never seem to get the search function to show me what I'm looking for. I'll probably spend some time this weekend looking up obscure topics and problems to try to master it. Better to learn it before I'm stuck on the side of the road looking for an answer in the middle of a thread that goes off topic on tailgate dampers.

I have better luck using google. Just type ranger 5g and whatever topic you're looking for.

Tailgate dampers? Geez, are we on to that already? You know, a thread’s no good unless dampers are mentioned within the first ten posts. ;)

I wasn’t suggesting at all that you should have searched this first. I was really only remarking that I knew some members would come along quickly and help you out. In particular, I thought about @airline tech ’s recent weekend fix on his daughter’s, boyfriend’s, uncle’s, cousin’s, brother’s Ranger.

Now, if you had asked about “biggest tires, no lift”, that might be a different story. ;)

Ranger5G's search algorithim can come up with same bizarre returns at times, depending on what you are searching for. One thing you might try is search on regular Google.Search. Usually a couple hits will come up that redirect you back to R5g.

Yup. It was funny the first 1,000 times, then not so much. Anyone ever see the SpongeBob episode where he rips his pants?
