They should be spreading de-icer prior to the storm. Do they have that capability?
Yes, I believe that TXDOT has that capability. That is a good point Steve.

Yeah the Weather Channel has been by far one of the worst for accuracy. I'd rather see higher more realistic numbers so people can prepare for the worst. That's why I always watched and liked Ryan & Max. They keep you up to date and are realistic without fear mongering. There's going to be many who will be caught off guard by this storm and do nothing because they're the ones who just rely on the government to do it for them.

If this happens expect weeks more of winter could be severe for the eastern US and Europe. Ryan also touched on this in his latest video that February could have the potential for several more of these storms across the country.

Robert @Grandaccess if you haven't already seen it I think you'll like this site. 😁

But looking into next week, there is another shift forecast in the mid-stratosphere, seen in the pressure anomaly below for the 30mb (23km/14miles) level. You can see a strong, broad Polar Vortex core in the stratosphere, even stronger than the one expected in the next few days.

This has the potential to bring down an even colder airmass, as despite being high in the stratosphere, it indicates where the main position of the Polar Vortex core is, reflecting on the lower levels.

And this is confirmed with the forecast for next week, which shows an even stronger spread of cold air over the central and eastern half of the United States, now also reaching deep towards the southeast. This event is likely to be the coldest so far this season, which aligns well with the strength of the stratospheric Polar Vortex core anomaly.
o_O This is shaping up to be a really brutal winter for those in the central states up through the east coast. It won't give them any time to fix/repair downed lines and get supplies back on the shelves. God bless the linemen and all the others who have to work in this!

Below is the pressure and temperature forecast for the start of February in the mid-stratosphere at the 10mb level (30km/18.5miles height). You can see two high-pressure areas (H) in the mid-stratosphere, and a very strong warming wave occurring where it comes together with the Polar Vortex (L), deforming and splitting its cores.

Better to be prepared than caught off guard.

I don't think most realize the size of this storm and of course the local stations (usually) never tell you what you need to here. It's 2,300 miles wide!

Thank you for the information update Dave. The truck and I are as prepared as we can be. I saw TXDOT out looking over the road as I was driving to work this morning.
Don’t worry Clay but if you had bought some M&S rated tires, you could be doing this…

Just a little early morning drive in the snow.

:D

My boss in Texas in a rural area is expecting one inch of ice then snow. That much ice is gonna knock down most lines and trees I would think.
1 inch of ice will do it, most utilities are good to 3/4 inch, most people have some sort of back up but if its extended over a week or more they cant store enough gas, they can go through 5 gal every 24 hours, thats a lot of gas over a week, and north of the Mason Dixon Line most older houses have a wood stove or fireplace

I used to work for a large corporation based here in MA. Every November, the Legal Department would send out a memo reminding everyone that it "snows in Massachusetts" and that everyone was still expected to come to work unless it was unsafe to do so, in which case they would be charged a vacation or sick day, even if they worked from home.

Alright, backed up in front of the house. Made it home within a hour. The roads aren't bad YET. Tomorrow that will probably be a different story.

Glad you made it home before the mess started. It looks like it's going to start getting worse there later tonight and into the morning. The sleet/ice line is right on the edge of Dallas and maybe it'll move a little more north and you guys won't get it to bad.
