And just how does downward vertical combustion pressure push rings out (horizontally) from the piston? <snipped>
Label me "Not convinced"
Combustion gas goes behind the rings and pushes them out against the cylinder wall. Pistons rings would not seal if they relied only on spring pressure.

I probably need to send a sample in to see how mine is doing at the 5k oil changes, but I have a hard time believing a bunch of gas is getting mixed it in when the level stays dead steady over those 5k miles. Unless it happens to burn off the same amount of oil that it replaces with gas.

No, I am not going to sniff it... I can only imagine what your neighbors think of those that sniff at their dipsticks often enough to notice a change. Unless you just really don't want them coming over to say hello.

Did someone from Blackstone start all this to drum up business?

That approach was previously employed here to promote tailgate dampers, but I didn't fall for it.

There’s the perfect illustration of the gas behind the rings helping them seal.
Yeah and at cold starts those rings are less sealed and with the high pressure of GDI you have more opportunity for blow by and at idle as well. I suspect with the introduction of dual injection on the 2.3 oil dilution will be reduced .

The lack of initial spring tension is by design. The compression pressure from combustion gases "push" our "loose" rings against the cylinder wall creating a better seal than a ring with high initial spring tension.
If they were tight when cold, then when really hot under boost they wouldn't be able to move at all. Aluminum expands a lot more than iron, so the block needs looser cold tolerances just to function when hot.

Zonbie,

How is your motor doing with the Amsoil? I lost MPG and my 2.3L feels “draggy” aka high mechanical losses with it installed. It also ticks now at startup. Is this some super thick 5W-30 or what?

This is my first oil change and waiting for the Blackstone, I feel like the Amsoil is a lot thicker than what came out.

I just accepted that this was a Ford issue with their direct injection system. Mine makes about a 1/4 inch on the dipstick every oil change. Never seems to go above that level though. Since I rarely keep a daily driver over 3 -4 years, someone else will get to worry about it.
