While out yesterday doing the Sunday drive thing, I seem to have run over some black paint and it spotted the right side of my truck. It does not appear to be tar or some other petroleum product. I do think it is some kind of paint. Anyway, I'm looking for some advice from someone on what to use to remove it w/o mucking up my paint or clearcoat. In a spot on the lower rocker panel, I tried alcohol... no effect. WD-40... removed it after a bit of scrubbing. And charcoal lighter fluid... best so far. Cut it quick. I am pretty nervous about using anything over the entire side of my truck. Any advice from someone who knows is appreciated.

TIA, Mike

My recommendation is Acrysol. I have been using it for close to 20 years. It’s not cheap but I’ve had the same can for at least 10yrs. It takes dried pine sap and everything else I’ve had on my vehicles off. It may take some time but it works. I spray wax the area once I remove the substance.

Pressure washer? I tend to blast stuff off but you do have to be careful. If the offending paint happens to be on top of wax, graphene, or ceramic, it might work, rather than trying to chemically dissolve it.

Either way, huge bummer since I'm sure there are other things you like to be doing instead of this!

Good luck!

Oh found this on google:

"... apply a liberal coating of petroleum jelly (vaseline) to the dried traffic paint and allow it to stay on overnight (8 to 12 hrs.)"

I've used Acetone with good results...providing you're not scrubbing the same spot for long periods...it'll strip all the wax off for sure...

Easy off oven cleaner, it is what pinstripers use to remove pinstriping paint that they are redoing or when they have changed their minds when they have done a design. I have a 1940 Ford coupe with pinstriping on it and had some redone several years after it had been applied. I tried rubbing compound wouldn't touch it, pinstripe artist told me put oven cleaner on a rag and wipe it off. Tried it and worked great, will not harm the clear coat I swiped the area with a paint detailer after and no harm.

Not bashing you, but something like this, I would need several other qualified sources to agree before I would try it.
I've seen what oven cleaner has done to my stainless steel sink after trying to clean BBQ grates, and it wasn't pretty

When I had my '12 Focus I ran over some fresh white paint. The car had Xylon applied as part of the deal when I purchased it, and the paint came right off! This made me opt for the paint protection offered in lieu of the no longer available Xylon.

Try an area that won't show, bottom of rocker panel see what it does.

Before you start putting solvents on your paint try a clay bar. Make sure you use the recommended spray such a a detailing spray or soapy car wash. I have used this successfully in the past to remove some paint speckles from my car when it was parked near a building being painted on a windy day.
